Prayers for My Kitty "Nephew"

My DSIL's kitten, Captain Jack, went in for his neutering surgery yesterday and is having a hard time. The vet isn't sure what happened, but thinks the kitty may have had a stroke or something, as he seems to be having difficulty with his vision and difficulty walking. He's only about 4 or 5months old, all black with greenish yellow eyes and very cute.

My nephew is a vet in Colorado and he has been in touch with the vets here. Captain Jack is currently in a local Veterinary Specialty Clinic where they are trying to figure out what happened.

I know there are many bigger problems in the world, but if anyone can spare a few prayers for this cute little guy and my very upset DSIL, I'd appreciate it.

I had this happen once to a patient of mine. The dog had a cardiac arrest during a routine surgery. We managed to revive him (CPR) but he was wobbly and seemed blind for a few days afterward. Eventually, he did make a full recovery, so don't give up hope!

Thank you for those hopeful words MickeyMouseGal. Apparently he had IV conscious sedation, not full anesthesia, for the procedure. He also got a rabies vaccine, so I am wondering if the vaccine could have interacted with the IV sedation????

Awww. Saying a prayer for the little guy now.

We take these kind of surgeries for granted and don't think much about anything happening but truth is, things do happen sometime.

I suppose he could have had a vaccine reaction while sedated, but I wouldn't think it would show those symptoms. An anesthetic problem is still my guess.

If it is an anesthetic problem, could it be transient, meaning that it will improve with time? The vet office did do liver & kidney bloodwork prior to the procedure.

I just said a prayer for little Capt. Jack -- I sure hope he's doing better today. Most of us certainly don't think about the "what if's" when we take our furry friends in for routine surgery...my prayers are with you, your family and the kitty. Please keep us updated about his progress.

Well, not much good news today.

The vets at the emergency center said they think he had some sort of hypoxic (lack of oxygen) "event". He still seems to be blind. He is eating and drinking, but not using the litterbox. He had just had a seizure right efore they called my DSIL to update her. There is some medciation that they can give him in a series of 6 doses that might help...an anti-oxidant which somehow absorb something...I don't really understand the whole concept behind it. They are telling y DSIL that they don't know if the seizure activity will stop, nor do they know if he will regain his sight.
