MY youngest daughter 23 got the results back from her PAP smear. The found abnormal cells and she is freaking out. She was using Planned PArenthood but is now getting an appointment with a private gyno for followup. We wanted the slide reevaluated by a pathologist of our choice but was told that it had already been discarded (a close friend is a pathologist). She is arranging for her to go to her and her daughter's gyno. Pray that it isn't cancer and just a simple anomally. She is only 23.

Lisbet -

Try not to worry. The same thing happened to me right around that age (23/24) and everything turned out just fine. Maybe it's something the female body goes through around that age? That sounds strange, but you never know, right? I remember my mom getting all upset at the time but I went back for a 2nd pap and everything was fine.

Hugs to your DD and you.

I know it's hard not to worry but I wouldn't worry to much as of now... many many of those tests come up abnormal and there are tons of reasons that could cause it. Get the new test done and get the results and go from there..... prayers for your dd.

I've had 2 with abnormal cells in the past, both times it was a false positive. In order to catch as close to 100% of the real positives as possible, sometimes tests are set up to class more things as positive than really are.

Hope hers turns out to be a false positive too.

I will send good thoughts. I am would relax a bit, I know it's hard. I've been through this more times than I can count. Started 10 yrs ago (at age 21). It is actually not that uncommon to have some sort of abnormal cells. That is why they'll do a biopsy and colposcopy. Just to see what the abnormality is and to watch it. I've had several dozen of these.

I can also tell you that in the rare cases of cervical cancer, cervical cancer is very "slow growing" (in layman terms). It's not an aggressive form. That is why yearly screening is sufficient. So, if she's been going all along regularly chances are it's going to be just mild to moderate dysplasia and nothing to think about again. I've had mine go from mild to carcinoma in situ (which is cells that if left alone could turn into cancer-- sometimes they refer to it as Stage 0 too). I did have to have 1/2 my cervix removed. This was after at least 7 yrs of straight bad pap smears though. That was in 2002- and I've been "clear" ever since w/ all my paps and biopsies. Also, I seen she's young and even having 1/2 my cervix removed hasn't rendered me infertile. If I were to ever get pregnant again I'd have to have stitches put in early on (I know the word but no idea how to spell it). It would be higher risk, but still very possible.

Tell her to try and relax and know that it is very common.

Ditto, I have had a few false positives and so has my sister. I hope that is the case with your daughter.

I also had an abnormal PAP in my mid-20s (around 1980) that was a pre-cancerous lesion. It was successfully removed with a laser, and I've had no problems since then. I had two children with no complications after that, too.

It's very scary when it happens to you - I'll keep your daughter in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug: Please let us know how she's doing!

Same exact thing has happened to me - right down to half a cervix! All of these procedures are done in the doctors office and are really not complicated. Everybody has some degree of anxiousness with it, but it can easily be taken care of and a normal life is almost a certainty. Good luck!

Keeping your DD in my Prayer's. Please let us know how she makes out, this can be very scary. :grouphug:
