Pray for Eddad:..Thanks again

Sounds like the meds but I am not an expert. More hugs and prayers Jenny

Well ,they have started him on physical an occupational therapy..He can only sit up for 10 minutes with much difficulty..He has trouble talking and using his arms..He can barely move his legs or his body on his own..He can't feel his right leg from the knee down.. Sometimes he seems pretty lucid and makes a joke answered questions etc..Other times he makes no sense..He thinks our cat is in the hospital room. He though there was a bug crawling on the TV..There wasn't..He also thought they had a party in his hotel room last night... I don't know if it's the morphene or not...They are getting a neuro consult and are going to do an ultrasound of his non-functioning kidneys.

One day at a time, Jenny.:)

The morphine or the ICU issue..Bring it to the Drs attention and see if they can move him ASAP! Sounds like my brother after several days. A few days out of ICU and he improved rapidly!

The altered mental status can have several causes: ICU psychosis, which is when folks who have been in ICU for a while lose track of the day and time because they can't always see out the windows, could be meds, could be just the general trauma of what he has been through has thrown him. As a nurse, it does not strike me as totally out of the ordinary that he would have some mental status alterations after being on a vent, being medicated, being in ICU for an extended period of time...again, sort of "expected" after an episode like Ed has had. The neuro consult will give you all peace of mind, but my guess is that is is more of a situational thing than anything else.

The circulatory issues don't seem like they'd be out of the realm of possibility either, based on how much blood he has lost. The kidney functiuon could be tied into that too, although it's good that they are getting an ultrasound to see exactly what is flowing where.

Remember, Jenny, he's been through a major trauma that a lesser person may not have survived. It's going to take time for him to recover, but he will.

I think the leg pain is from them cutting his leg(fascia?) The cuts on both sides of his leg are still open..They are bringing in a plastic surgeon to close it soon..They are all saying how well he is doing, how far he has come etc. Its just hard for me to see him like this, and I think he is starting to get frustrated.

Well, from your description he has come very far, but I know you want your Ed back. And he will be back...it'll just take time.

Try and convince him to be patient. Remind him how far he's come already.

Prayers continue for all of you.

My father was one of the first people in the country to have open heart bypass surgery. He was in ICU and on a ventilator for a long time. When they finally removed the ventilator and let him come out of the drugs, he told us incredible stories of things he thought he'd seen. He told us and truely believed that he watched doctors amputate the leg of the man in the bed next to him in ICU. We checked with the doctor and nothing like that ever happened. The truama and drugs cause hallucinations.

Jenny, please realize that a lot of this will fade for him. You will remember much more of it than he will. :grouphug:

When my mother in law had open heart surgery and was in recovery, the nurse asked her where she was and my mother in law responded that she was in hell. She laughs when we tell her that story now. She recalls none of it and is doing great. The mind is an amazing thing.

I agree that a lot of this will fade for him. Continue to be strong!!!

Just checking in, sounds like everything is improveing! :flower3:

Jenny, just came in and caught up on the last few days. It really does sound like he is improving a lot! I have a friend who's grandmother broke her leg in a couple places and was stuck in the hospital for over a month before going to rehab. Same thing for a friend who's dad had a non life threatening open heart procedure. It really just does take a while.

I hope the consult & ultrasound reveal good things for him. I know with heavy drugs strange things can happen. Another friend of mine was telling a story about how her friend was drugged up in the hospital and thought she was having twins. She had a hysterectomy years ago :teeth: As my friend joked, must be some good drugs there.

I wish you weren't having to deal with your mom at the same time though. Try to keep in mind she has lived a full life at 75. Going through chemo and radiation is no picnic and sometimes people just don't want to fight it. But give her time, she may change her mind.

Most importantly hang in there and take care of yourself

Rough day.I got there today and his mchine kept going off. Tachycardia, and then they told me he had a 102 degree temp earlier today..They sent me out of the room for while..
*Graphic warning* So he was moving around a lot and coughing. at one point he coughed and blood shot out of his chest wound across the bed..He soaked right through all of his dressings..They rushed in an ddid a chest x-ray,blood tests etc... The dialisis is thinning his blood and making him bleed more.. They are currently giving him some blood and plasma.. He's still not making much sense when he talks, and I say talks lightly. He is barely understandable...
In good news, they took out the lst chest tube yesterday.. He had the neurological consult today while I was there..He is confused, but the do feel it is because of the trauma /dialysis/meds etc.. They see nothing in his tests that show any sort of brain issues.. He was answering questions well enough for them to feel it is nothing but confusion

Wow, rough day. I guess you almost have to expect some roadblocks though. I would try not to be too concerned if the staff doesn't seem too concerned....and yes, I know that's easier said than done.

Hang in there, and don't forget to take care of you!

Oh my!

Which chest wound did the blood come from? The main incision? Is it closed?

When my son had open heart surgery the doctor taught him to hold a pillow over his incision to cough. I think I would have been very unnerved if I saw that though!

Also, we did have to deal with fevers during recovery too. Not fun. It did resolve itself though.

Hang in there Jenny...it seems wierd to say that to you b/c you clearly have already hung in there past anyone's reasonable expectations. Here's hoping your stress will be alleviated in the near future! :wizard:

The blood came from the main chest incision. It's stapled shut .He's so out of it that he tries to pull out the tubes,so he is restrained...He can't do the pillow over the chest thing while restrained.
How's your son?

Oh yes, the hands are tied down! I forgot about that. Yes, they tied my son's hands down too.

His surgery was 2 years ago this June. He's doing fine now. Kids are really resilient though. 6 months after the surgery he was at Disneyworld (although I wouldn't let him walk around, he was in a stroller).

WISHIN & PRAYING for a better night!!!!

Hi...I have been following your story and hope everything gets better. My mom was in the hospital in December and very confused and disoriented. It got better as time went by. Sure scares you though. She's home now, and even though she is still weak and can't walk well, she is sharp as a tack!

Hi Jenny. Sounds like he is improving. Im sorry today was rough. there will be good and bad days but the good days get more frequent :)

Still praying here.
