Practical tips I learned from our Dolphin/BLT split stay...

... with a 6yo and a 2yo who still napped. We just got back from a Friday-Saturday 8 night stay, split 3/5 Dolphin/BLT. Here's a few things I learned from the trip.

My concerns when planning:
1. No DME to Dolphin
2. How to handle the toddler's nap, especially on the split stay day
3. Luggage transfer

What happened:
1. We used FL tours, which sent an Escalade with a car seat and booster seat for us, and a lovely driver who had young kids of his own so he UNDERSTOOD. We had been up since 3:30am for a 6am flight. Went to Epcot while we waited for our room to be ready. Our stroller rental was waiting for us at checkin. We changed into shorts and off we went. (Remembering to bring a credit card +TIW since no MB room charges.)

We still got a room ready text while we were riding Soarin' at 11 am. Came back, had lunch and took a nap. (+1 Dolphin, as we have not gotten into our Disney room before 4pm in our last 4 trips)

2. This was both the best and worst. The worst: we had "made a green choice" (declined housekeeping) but had been told there would still be daily trash service and we could always just call. First 2 days we called and it was not done (or if there was a room check done while we were out they didn't take the garbage - stinky diapers - which I'd been told explicitly wouldn't be a problem even if we had declined housekeeping). Couldn't find a trash room, ended up taking the garbage bags and either leaving them outside our door or in a housekeeping area (that had no garbage bins). The one time my DH called again, the person on the phone argued with him that since we had declined housekeeping we couldn't ask for trash service, which was the opposite of what we'd been told at check in. Shrug. Sorry to the people on our hallway who had to walk by the garbage we left outside our room. (+1 BLT - trash service/room checks there were super nice and easy and unobtrusive)

The best: I'm an SPG elite member and we had booked the stay on points (so now, plans to buy a BCV/BWV are on indefinite hold - although we like villas much better, my SPG points are already in my account to spend), and that also entitled me to a 4pm checkout. So, baby's nap wasn't an issue at all. She napped in the room while I packed us up. Between staying on points and having a guaranteed late checkout on transfer day, this was an EASY EASY split! The only potential downsides - we'll always have to do our Swolphin stay in the first half, because we simply cannot go from a 1br villa to a hotel room! The horror!! Also, it means we likely aren't going to ever use the complimentary grocery stop with FL tours because we are going first into a hotel room, not a villa with a kitchen. (+1 Dolphin)

3. Luggage transfer was a little nerve wracking but turned out fine. Because of our late checkout, the bell desk guys were like, "we might have sent our MK luggage truck out for delivery already..." (since regular checkout is also 11am). But they hadn't, they checked, and they were open about what they did and didn't know. Fallback would have been uber to BLT instead of taking Disney bus to MK, but it would have been fine. Instead, we never got a room ready text at BLT despite OLCI, so we got to BLT to do in-person check in after our BOG dinner, which was late and the girls were pretty tired. But we walked into our 1br villa and our 6yo was beside herself over how much space we had (especially compared to the Dolphin room, with 2 full size beds, a crib and a double stroller squashed into it).

What I learned for next time:
A. Despite only having hotel rooms (may look into using points for a suite next time), the overall experience at the Dolphin was great. They gave us a room on the 3rd floor with a balcony. It was lobby level but quiet, and very close to the bus transportation (no elevators to get there) and a QS food outlet. There were tons of activities, it was a little Disney but not too Disney, and it was great walking to 2 parks. Given prices for BCV and BLT, and 4pm checkout at the Dolphin, our plans to buy at an EP resort are on hold indefinitely or until I run out of SPG points (which is never gonna happen). :D

B. If the fire alarm goes off at 7:15am and you are told to evacuate the hotel, and you had a 7:45 Cape May breakfast reservation and FPs at Epcot, at least throw a hairbrush and hair elastics into the park bag, and haul the stroller down the stairs. Luckily we were pretty much ready to go anyway - we were walking down the stairs with people in PJs and helped a lady down the stairs while someone else carried her wheelchair. We went to breakfast with unbrushed hair and teeth and DH went back later to get the stroller (we were well on our way to Cape May when we saw people walking back into the hotel), got some great pics of the girls in a very empty WS, pin traded, took it easy while DH ran back alone to get the stroller. (-1 bad breath most of the day)

C. With little kids and a big double stroller, I would probably only do this split stay with an MK DVC for the second part. We never got a room ready text, so it would have been harder to go to a park and then check in later if the resort and park were not close to each other.

D. I would do a quick walk around the room in the villa to make sure everything was working. We didn't notice the bench on seating in the dining area was broken, making it unusable, until the 2nd day, and since we were in the room a lot later in the day, it took until the 4th day for them to fix it. In the future we'll do more meals in the room, I think.

E. The Wave for a no-reservations breakfast or lunch is SO much better than Contempo Cafe, and not much more $$ (ie totally worth it) with TiW. If we do more meals in the room next time, though, not sure TiW will be worth it.

We had a GREAT trip. The staff at the Dolphin and BLT were so friendly and helpful (except for that one person on the phone who told DH they wouldn't take the trash... huh???). We loved the pools at the Dolphin and made so many great memories there and at BLT (first stay on our own points). We would definitely do a split with Swan/Dolphin again, for a trip 7 nights or longer.

Our family's must-do restaurants for future trips:
Me: Tiffins (our vote for best in-park restaurant)
DH: California Grill
6yo: Cinderella's Castle!!!
2yo: PRINCESS!!!!!

(Also, the 2yo was not a huge fan of BOG dinner, as she asked, "Beet eat you?" many times. No, the Beast is not going to eat you...)

I guess it's a good thing our home resorts are at MK... :cutie:princess:

Wow 4pm late checkout is luxurious :-). That plus being able to use points is a big plus for Dolphin/Swan over buying an Epcot resort.

I love Tiffins, it’s my favorite Disney restaurant! It wasn’t that crowded when I was there in 2016, so I hope that has changed and they don’t ever dumb down the menu!

Did you guys do the Character Breakfast at Cape May? How was it?

Nice trip report, glad you guys had a great time!

We have enjoyed our short stays at the Swan, too.

We have been told to evacuate from Dolphin in middle of night, and at Kidani once in the day. Not fun experiences.

LOL, Although my 2yo last summer enjoyed BOG, she was definitely super-concerned about the 'rawr-rawr getting cranky'! Although the implication did lend itself to a cleaner plate at the end of the meal ;)

Sounds like you had a great trip! We did the opposite on our last trip and went from a 1BR at CCV to a hotel room at the Dolphin on our SPG points... definitely not as pleasant to do it that way, especially since we really fell in love with CCV and WL overall. After that trip DH really wanted us to use our DVC points for 1BRs and larger for all future trips. We have a stay coming up at the Poly in a studio since we’ve never stayed there, but I made sure to book a 1BR at VGF for the second half so we can look forward to a bigger room (never stayed there before either!).

Sounds like you had a great trip! I agree that Swolphin has some of the best pools on property, rivaling SAB (which I love but does get a little too crowded sometimes) and AKL. Nothing beats the Four Seasons though :teeth:

Unfortunately I don't have "free" points to use at the Four Seasons! The rooms and hallways were a little worn in places, but we were hardly ever in the room anyway. SAB is a little challenging with a 2yo and 6yo and our family alwyas had to split up because they wanted to do different things and we needed one adult with each kid. The only thing I did miss at Swolphin (maybe literally) was a kiddie pool or shallow/zero entry pool. So we were always holding the 2yo.

Welcome back! Great tips. It sounds like you guys had a great trip. I booked a very last minute trip for the end of March when my resale points set to expire at the end March showed up in my account. Amazingly the morning they showed up so did a a 2 BR at BLT. Needless to say I jumped on that. How was the noise in the villa with the fireworks? Wondering if it’s going wake the littles.

I think it was the 4pm late checkout that did it for us. It made what could have been a crazed day with cranky kids into a very mellow one. It really didn't disrupt our routine at all. It's helped quell our BCV/BWV addonitis.

We are definitely going back to Tiffins, and someday to Nomad Lounge for a date night. It is now our favorite in-park restaurant (though BOG dinner seems to have stepped up their game, too).

Nice trip report, glad you guys had a great time!

Well... the 2yo was still afraid of the "fur" characters, but she loved the face characters. By our 2nd day (Akershus dinner), she was running out of her seat to hug the princesses and hold their hands and pose for pictures. The food at Cape May was decent and the kids liked the "make your own waffle sundae" bar. And we were somewhat distracted by not having brushed our teeth and hair thanks to the evacuation, but it was fun. And a great breakfast stop on the way to the park.

We have enjoyed our short stays at the Swan, too.
I may look into spending a few more points to stay at the Swan next time - they have queens instead of double beds, and it's closer to the Boardwalk, EP and HS.

Wow. We'll count ourselves lucky, then! It *is* a little disconcerting to hear the announcement, "This is not a drill. Please evacuate by the nearest exit and do not take the elevators." I felt really badly for the people who were still sleeping. At least there's that benefit to having kids who wake at 6 no matter when they go to bed. We asked the Dolphin staff later what it was, and they said they couldn't find anything. (?) We did see some smoke coming out of an exhaust pipe in the roof, which makes me wonder if it was a kitchen fire that looked like it might get out of control, that was then controlled. I'm glad it turned out to be nothing.

LOL, Although my 2yo last summer enjoyed BOG, she was definitely super-concerned about the 'rawr-rawr getting cranky'! Although the implication did lend itself to a cleaner plate at the end of the meal ;)

HAHA! Ours kept asking "Beet eat you" which was cute and hilarious and sad at the same time, especially since she was wearing her "princess dress" - a Belle nightgown. We told her the Beast we reading in his library and she was not convinced. We did get the requisite Crying Toddler With Character photo (her older sister has one with Tigger), so no more trauma after this.

You will love VGF! It's our 2nd home resort - which we ended up buying instead of BCV or BWV. We've only stayed at the hotel and in a studio and even so, I am feeling stingy about splurging on a 1BR. (we are thinking about going over Easter week in 2019, SO MANY POINTS!). I can't imagine going from a 1BR to the Swolphin, even though in terms of park touring that's what I'd like - get the insanity of MK done first, and then unwind in the Boardwalk area. We were so relaxed after our stay at the Dolphin, and then every day at crowd levels of 9-10 at MK was sensory overload. The one day that was supposed to be a 6 - we checked touring plans and the MDE app, and Pirates, 7DMT, Space Mountain and Splash Mountain were all down for at least an hour in the AM. It did NOT feel like a 6 at the rides that were operating.

Thanks! We really did. That's so exciting that you are going to be able to use your expiring points! What view is your 2BR? We were in a 1BR std on the 4th floor, and could see Space Mountain from the living room, and could see the fireworks from the balcony. They were loud, but not too bad. And then at 9 or 10, you get the water show with that song that always gets stuck in my head. Strangely, that one you can't always see it but you can hear it... If the kids are already asleep the fireworks likely won't wake them up. You'll definitely hear them from the room even with the doors closed, but it's not *too* loud. Then again, we live in NYC and we sleep through honking and fire trucks and garbage trucks every night! (The noise level is comparable.)

You might want to check the schedule by the end of March. When we were there last week, the show started at 7:55. One night I took our older daughter up to TOTWL to watch from there. We went up around 7:30 and had no problem finding a place to see everything. (You'll need to go down to 1 to get scanned/checked and then brought upstairs). There were lots of kids in PJs, which is what we did with our 6yo. On our last night, we had dinner at CRT and they told us we needed to finish by 7:40 to get out - by the time we walked out they'd already closed the whole area around the carousel. We booked out as quickly as we could, like salmon swimming upstream, because the last time the 2yo saw them from the balcony she cried and said they were too loud and 'cary. We ended up getting as far as the flagpole at the far end of Main St., and decided to just stop and watch the show. We held both kids so they could see, had a terrific view, and it was magical. The projections on the castle are truly amazing, and there are some really cute custom Disney fireworks. The kids were sleeping in the room by 9. What a way to wind up our vacation.

We got a lake view 2BR. I had really written off those points, but the timing worked and the Disney Gods smiled upon us with great availability. So, I decided trying to unload them on the rental board for cheap wasn't as good as just taking a last minute trip. That's good to know that they aren't too loud. We don't live in NYC, but we do live on an Army Post and my children sleep through the cannons and artillery going off at all hours, so I think we will be good too. I think the show starts at 8:55 while we are there, so we may be able to pull off going to TOTWL to watch the show as my children will be on central time and I'm not going to adjust them to eastern time for a 4 day trip. We got stuck in that salmon swimming upstream before trying to get out before the fireworks a couple years ago, and it didn't end well. My almost 2 year old at the time was scared to death of the big booms. She's 4 now and is talking a big game about not being scared anymore. But, I don't believe her so we will not attempt the fireworks in the park and will watch from the safety of a place we can abort mission rather quickly.

Ha - you will be FINE!

We did surprisingly well near the flagpole. I think because when you're in the crowd, there's lots of people around and no one is scared, so it feels more comforting. And also, although the fireworks are loud, so is the music (they pipe that in to TOTWL too). The drawbacks to TOTWL are, of course, not seeing the castle projections which are a large part of the show, and
(spoiler alert)
also seeing that fireworks that look from Main St. like they are centered around the castle ... aren't.

But I also agree that TOTWL is a lot more friendly, uncrowded and easy to abort mission with minimal casualties. :) Maybe do TOTWL one night and if it goes well, consider Main St. It is really a short walk!

Also there is a great thread here on BLT rooms and views, but in general "high floor, even numbered room" will get you the outer ring, and add "north tower" for better views of fireworks, and "south tower" for monorail, seven seas lagoon and GF views.

Excellent trip report @kboo. We leave two weeks from today to make our way to BLT for a night and the BCV for 7. We are all early risers and have EPCOT rope drop for the day we t'fer from BLT to BCV. What would you rec for Me, DW, DD5 and DD2 plus luggage for the t'fer? My hope was to check out of BLT and take everything to BCV and drop off luggage as we head into EPCOT for RD. We are pressing our luck a little with a 5 hour drive to catch a 6am flight with DME to BLT. But, we have scheduled a pool day and hoping for an early room ready at BLT in time for naps.

Great TR - we love the Dolphin and stay there about every other year as a 'splurge'.

I don't think I have ever gotten a room ready text at the CR or BLT before 3-4pm, but I hope you get lucky. Hopefully your kids will sleep on the drive or the flight (DH and our 2yo slept on our 6am flight, our 6yo and I did not). We rented a double stroller that was at bell services by the time we got to our 1st hotel, and our plan was if the room wasn't ready in time, we'd at least get the kids some rest or nap time in the stroller. Unfortunately that doesn't help for the grownups, though. It might be a good night for early bed time for all.

For the day of the transfer, we just packed our park bag (we travel *REALLY* lightly in the parks - a clear bag with hoodies (you probably won't need), diaper stuff, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen. Ponchos in the bottom of the stroller, if necessary. I used a pin purse for my pins, AP and DVC cards, ID and phone, and thats about all we took into the park. And if youre thinking of taking your own stuff over to BCV to drop it off, I guess I would take an uber or Minnie Van. Enjoy!
