I saw on one website that one helpful thing to pack is a power strip because there aren't enough plugs for electronics. Then on another one I saw that power strips aren't allowed on DCL. Are they allowed? Did anyone bring one? Worth the real estate in the luggage or not?

Supposedly they will confiscate your power strip and you'll get it back at the end of the cruise. They want you to borrow one that they've had a chance to inspect. See Guest Services, I'm sure there is a deposit.

From the DCL website:
In order to maintain a safe and secure environment for our Guests and crew, the following are examples of items that Guests are not allowed to bring on board. These and other similar items will be stored upon being found.
  • Extension cords or Surge Protectors
https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/...plans/faqs/prohibited-items/prohibited-items/

Note, that would be any item that describes itself as a "surge protector" or "extension cord".

I take a really small travel adapter, with a couple of outlets and USB charges, works a treat. It is surge protected so probably not allowed!

Answer is found in why surge protectors are banned. For the same reason power strip surge protectors have a history of creating house fires.

Power strips with protector parts must somehow absorb surges. But at hundreds or thousands joules, those protector parts are near zero. A thermal fuse must disconnect those protector parts while leaving that surge connected to appliances. Sometimes that fuse does not blow fast enough - the catastrophic MOV failure can create a fire.

Meanwhile a hundreds or thousand joule surge typically is too tiny to overwhelm protection already inside all electronics.

Best is a power strip that must always have that critically important 15 amp circuit breaker. And no protector parts. IOW it does not have lights to report protector failure and does not claim to absorb energy (joules).

Same risks exist in homes. Never put a power strip protector on a rug or behind furniture. They even have a history of creating fires inside firehouses.

I don't disagree with the DCL policy however I have been on a few DCL cruises and have always taken my extension cord with me to power all my devices and never had it confiscated. So will they allow the USB multi charging adapter?

Yes, many people have brought extension cords/surge protectors onboard, even after DCL added them to the prohibited list. Some of them even got them past security. But they are on the list, it's your call as to whether you want to follow DCL's policy or not.

Just be prepared to have any such items confiscated.

JMO, but, it's possible that a dedicated USB charger could be skipped by security, even if it's marketed as a surge protector.

I don't bring a power strip, but on more than one occasion, I have brought on a multi-port USB charger for our family's various and sundry electronic devices. I didn't try to hide it, and have never had a problem.

That's what I have. It's great for charging 3 iPhones and a couple of cameras.

Yes, I've taken my 5 port USB adapter to Guest Services and had it "approved".

Considering this trip all I am taking is our phones and and Tablet then it sounds like just getting a USB Multi charger would be OK. I never knew about the surge protector and extension cord policy before, I guess I got lucky on all my past trips. :D

Thanks for all the information about this everyone!:thumbsup2

We brought a multi USB charger and didn't need it. There seemed to be enough outlets for everyone to plug in as needed. And honestly the kids used their electronics very seldomly.

For our Alaskan sailing we noted on our reservation that we wanted a power strip in our room. When we boarded we went to the customer service desk and they had one waiting on us. We had to sign off on a $50 deposit if we didn't return it. For our sailing earlier this year we sailed concierge. We again noted our reservation and the power strip was waiting for us in our room when we arrived.

Reach out to Disney and ask about it. They made the process relatively painless.

I believe we had six individual outlets in our room... one on one nightstand, two on the other, two at the desk, and one behind the TV (you could have one more there if you unplugged the TV). And we do travel with a multi-USB charger, which is great.

One would hope that the next generation ships would have wall mounted sockets like these installed. maybe for the wonders upgrade too?
