I love the idea of the power of 10 and I have already donated. I am disappointed in those around me though. I have asked pretty much everyone I know and none of them are willing to give a measly 10 bucks. I explained what Give kids the world is, I have shown them Give Kids the World website and they still said no. Today I blogged about it on my family blog and no one has commented and usually I have lots of comments on my posts. I will be blogging about it on my Disney blog tomorrow.

Anyways, I am so sad that those around me couldn't help at all not even a little. What is wrong with some people. Oh and it isn't for financial reasons that they had to say no

Sorry for my book, I needed to vent

:confused3 Maybe they've already given to the causes close to their hearts. Whether that be the aspca, battered women's shelters, Feed the children, or programs to give women a job in India, rather than being sold into prostitution. Everyone has their own calling. GKTW is an excellent program, but if someone feels more strongly about something else all the more power to them. I'm sure that you don't give to everyone who asks, do you?

I understand that but I don't get asked much but if I do I at least give a $1 and we have taught our dd's that we need to help others. I guess it wouldn't bug me so much if they weren't so rude about their response.

I have help a nonprofit raise money for years. Because it works with the state and federal agencies, a popular misconception is that it receives enough money from both to support it. The organization has to "educate" the public about this all the time.

I wonder if GKTW is the same way. Folks might be thinking that it is "affiliated" with or even owned by Disney so it doesn't need donations.

How are you pitching GKTW to your friends and family?

January is usually a bad month for fund raising because a lot of people are tapped out because of the holidays. Since there is no time constraint on the Power of 10 initiative you might have more luck giving everyone a month or so to decompress from the holidays and get past the big bills that they often bring.

Well, rude is not cool. That would bother me. I am just grateful that so Manu people support the charities that I can't. I support the ones I listed. No, I don't feel the need to donate to everything asked. I get several requests a month. My sons seem to have learned about giving even so. They earn their money, and have helped rebuild homes in Haiti, and built an orphanage in Honduras.

I agree.

GKTW seems like a great and worthy cause. However, there are many great and worthy causes and my family has chosen the ones that are close to our hearts to donate to. Would I like to donate to every worthy cause (even just $10), sure...can I financially, no.

So, keep doing what you are doing - promote GKTW since it is your calling. But, do not be disappointed in others because it is not theirs.

Yup, this exactly. I posted on Facebook a few times, but I'm going to give it a rest until March.

Remember, we have years to get that $10 from them (Like Pete said, it might take 5 years to get to a million dollars). If you were going to get them a birthday present this year, spend $10 less on them and donate that money to GKTW in their name.

As for me, I'm not even going to ask anybody, I'm just going to send in the $100 myself.

Great idea! Actually for my children's teacher's gifts for the holidays, we made a donation in each of their names to our local food bank. We then made a little certificate for each letting them know the donation had been made in their honor. I wasn't sure how this would go over, but most of the recipients said they really liked the idea.

I feel your pain.

I am actually trying to find 10 people that will find 10 more people.

Because many people know that I am crazy about GKTW, it will be easier for me than someone that is just talking about it for the first time.

I think GKTW sort of sells itself short, too...the pictures online look really "cool"...but what it means to the family that goes there...it doesn't scratch the surface of the power GKTW has to change the lives of the families.

By educating people about GKTW, you are doing something for the cause...even if they don't donate now, they know a little bit more about it, which is great for GKTW - because I think awareness needs to be raised, too.

Keep on trying. You will find your 10. :) And maybe you can convince someone to find 10 more. You never know!

So, when you do that do they get the write off? I have never understood picking your own charity and giving money in someone else's name. I guess that I would want a gift taken from someone to at least go to their choice cause.

Amazing...

We are not taking the write off, and did not do this to benefit ourselves!. In this case, each of the children's schools support the same food bank with food drives. The teachers and staff play a great role in these drives. So this donation piggybacks on their efforts.

But, thanks so much for the vote of confidence in the ulterior motives of our donations. Conversation over.

I am going to try and think of otherways as well. My goal is to get a bunch of Boston area DISers to get togther and do something.. Maybe a Night at a local resturant who will donate money, maybe a Charity Ball type thing with a band, food and a silent auction.. who know.. be creative

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I will wait a little bit and talk to them again. I think that for the next year I will donate $10 to the cause, at l am doing something that way. It was manly my family that were rude and hurtful and it bothered me because I have an illness that I will have the rest of my life and they see the stress and other stuff that goes on in my immediate family. I explained that GKTW was not affiliated with Disney and what they do is provide a place for terminally ill children and their families to be able to forget about being sick for a week. I shared the website and the podcast part. Oh well, I will do my $10 a month

Well said! :thumbsup2

geez. just wondering if it was your cause or theirs. It is nice that it was theirs. The op wants everyone to donate to her cause and there are a ton of important causese out there, like making sure people have food in their bellies. Oops, sorry for more conversation!:snooty:

I don't want everyone to donate to my cause my vent was about them being rude about it. I understand there are lots of causes I just felt those i asked were rude to me and I was surprised that out 36 people asked no one would donate a single penny.

Maybe it is time to close this thread daneenm seems to feel attacked and so do I
