Potty training?

My darling DD is almost 20 months old. I didn't think that we'd even approach the subject of potty training until this summer, at the earliest, but I've been told by a couple of other moms that she might be exhibiting some signs of readiness. Mostly, she's just really interested in the toliet. She points to it saying "potty" and loves to flush it. I'm not convinced that these actions really represent interest, but the other mom's have told me that they are and I need to really jump on the window of opportunity. Frankly, I am in no rush to potty train her. It seems like having to stop whatever we are doing so we can rush her to a toliet is much more of a pain than changing a few diapers a day! I guess I just don't want to "miss the opportunity."

Since I thought we had a few more months, I've done NO research on this subject yet. Can anyone recommend any good websites or books that addresses potty training? Any advise appreciated! Thanks!

I think your instincts are right, mom. My DD's did not train until well after that age. When we did start training, a reward chart worked pretty well for us. Good luck!

I don't know any websites but my DD was trained by 19 mos and my son by 2 so she is certainly old enough and think that diaper money can go towards Disney.

My DS was almost 2 1/2, he was quite lazy. My DD currently 19 mths, has also been showing some interest. I actually put her on the potty twice now & she did tinkle a little. She is still wetting her diapers & not asking to go, but whenever we are getting ready to bathe I always ask her if she wants to get on the potty. I figured at least she would not be afraid, hopefully she will start asking to go more often. I do make a big deal when she goes, we cheer for her & she loves that. Good Luck.

Give it a try and see - it couldn't hurt and you could always go back to diapers. My dd will be 27 months tomorrow and is completely potty trained. We started just about 20 months with pull-ups -- she did really well and would stay try all day and many nights. On her 2nd birthday we switched to panties -- then the accidents started. It took her about a month to get used the feel of the panties and to get past the security of the pull-ups. My suggestion if you decide to try is to not use pull-ups -- go straight to the underwear. Yes, you'll have some messes to clean and a lot of clothes to wash but in the long run I believe it works out for the best. My ds who is now 4 started with pull-ups as well and switched to a new daycare a couple of weeks after we started potty training -- they asked me to not use pull-ups and to bring underwear/extra clothes for him. He was completely potty trained within a couple of weeks.
