For the past 10 yrs or so, we've had 2 tall thin arborvitae (evergreen) trees growing in 24" pots on our small deck. They've been such a nice addition & provided nice color and form throughout our blah New England winters.
Even though we've fed them, they've now just become pot / root bound, and being pushed into the deck corners, the snow has done quite a number on the back side of each tree. The back sides are pretty much dead at this point. We are going to replant them into the ground somewhere on the condo property against the woods to try to get more life out of them.
Our deck looks soooooo bare & blah without them there. Any ideas on what other potted trees I could replace them with that might not have same problem of backside dieing off? But have nice color & form all winter?
It must be compact. We don't have room for any pots larger than 24" so tree would have to not grow larger than 3 feet wide for example.
How do those spiral evergreens hold up?
Or japanese holly trimmed to conical shapes? Although I prefer not having to trim whatever we buy.
Should I just suck it up & buy the same tree knowing it will only last about 10 years again?
