Potential DVCer

Jim - I see by your sig, you have both OKW and BCV. Just based on the comments on this board, and the availability of resales, it looks like BCV is in higher demand than OKW. What's your experience with both and which do you prefer when you make your ressies?

Is there a best time of year when there seem to be more resales than other times?

Is it possible to just "drop by" a DVC resort or do you have to make an appointment? Say I'm at FWL for Dinner or at the BW, would someone be able to show me around VWL, BWV or BCV?

How do the DVC rooms compare with their counterparts? For example, VWL rooms vs. FWL.

Is there a picture or map of StormAlong Bay? Does that make BCV slighlty more desireable than BWV?

The only resort DVC is actively selling is Saratoga Springs. That is the only resort for which they will give you a formal tour.

However, you can ask at the front desk of any resort if they have an empty room that you can tour. If it isn't a busy time, and they have a staff member available, someone will escort you to the room and allow you to look around for a couple of minutes. No guarantee as to what size of room it might be, assuming they have any unoccupied rooms at all.

The DVC studios are very comparable to the Deluxe resort rooms in terms of square footage and amenities. But the DVC rooms also feature a kitchenette in each Studio and free access to public laundry facilities. The 1B, 2B and Grand Villas have no peer at any of the Disney resorts. They are truely "home away from home" accommodations.

You can probably find floorplans on either the main Disney World web site or the DVC site.

You seem to be really hung up on this issue of "desirability." At present time, resales at BCV and VWL are typically the most difficult to come by. The main two reasons are, IMO, the proximity to theme park (which many consider to be a valuable perk) and the very small size of each property.

BWV is probably third on the list, again due to the proximity to Epcot / MGM and the fact that it's about half the size of Old Key West.

But the general public's concept of "desirability" should not be the primary determining factor in your decision where to purchase. As I said in my prior post, OKW has the largest guest rooms of any of the DVC properties, and it also has 12-person Grand Villas which cost about HALF the points of the GVs at BWV or SSR. Thus if you travel with many friends and family members, you should definitely consider OKW for that reason. According to reports it is nearly impossible to book an OKW Grand Villa at 7 months.

But my point is, gather all of the info about the resorts. Tour as many as possible. And then decide based upon the accommodations that suit your tastes and needs. While BCV is arguably the most popular resale, there are many people who have no interest in owning or staying there. Make the decision that is right for YOU.

I do find that closeness is a perk, that's why I'm leaning towards the VWL, BWV & BCV. Right now my DD love the MK an AK and the outdoors feel of FW. But as the family ages, being w/in walking or boating distance of MGM & EP would be nice.

Desirability is nice in case of a need to resale. I'd rather spend a little extra on the front end so I don't have to worry as much on recouping it on the back end.

But you are right, I need to find some time to visit the sites. Maybe I can escape while DD & DW lounge by the pool or take a siesta during the afternoon.

Only problem is that popularity will change over the years. There's a pretty good discussion going now (as is prone to happen from time-to-time) about the possibility of a DVC wing at the Contemporary resort. Sounds like that location would eclipse the current properties substantially in many's eyes.

And other unforseen circumstances could change the situation further. What if DVC decided to add another 200 rooms at BCV?

The point is we really don't know what will happen 5 or 10 or 30 years from now.

This is one case where I believe you are much better off following your heart rather than your head. Don't expend too much energy trying to predict which property will net you a couple more dollars per point IF you should happen to sell--just buy at the resort you really want to stay at.

Or, if you're looking to purchase upward of 300 points, consider hedging your bet and buying at multiple properties. That will give you a home resort advantage at two locations (up to the number of points you own at each resort), and the convenience of selling one of the contracts if you decide you need fewer points in the future.

Good luck.

Hi, cruise-o-matic. You have received a lot of good advice here.

I just wanted to point out one small detail that I see recurring in your posts...
Villas at Wilderness Lodge are indeed at The Wilderness Lodge, and are not associated with the Fort Wilderness Campground (at least for the purposes of this discussion).
This is a small detail, but I just didn't want you to go looking for VWL at FW!

Good luck with your decision. They are all truly great resorts in their own way!
