Postponed trip thanks everyone for their advice

Sorry to vent, but we've been planning for months. Took DD10 to the doctor today and she was prescribed antibiotics for strep throat. About 2 hours ago DS7 start throwing up and now has a fever. We are flying to Orlando and our plane leaves at 5:45 am. It will take 8 hours to get there.

Any advice other than trying to change our flight?

Since we would have been siting at the airport now and I am home writing this, I thought I would let you all know that we did postpone our trip. Thank you all for your advice - I would like to clarify that DS was not throwing up continuously - he did so twice and hasn't since so I would not have exposed anyone to a child vomiting vehemently.

Strep can cause vomiting too, so I'd go ahead and see if your pediatrician will call in a script for your DS too. Those antibiotics work fast - and if it is strep for him too, should help him feel better after just one or two doses. Plenty of fluids and lots of rest. Fingers crossed and prayers said for you!

If you can't change flight, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Bring lots of saltines, bland snacks and let the flight attendants know as they will bring extra bags. We have a child who get sick on airplanes all the time.

I will be the bad guy, but there is no way I would take sick kids on the plane. At least with your son, you have no idea what he is ill with and if he would be contagious come flight time. To me, it would be irresponsible to take a potentially contagious child onto that flight and around other people.

I agree. I would try and change the flight for a couple of days. No way would I take a contagious child on a plane. That is not fair to him or the other people flying.

When my DD has had strep, her only symptom was vomiting. I'd see about getting your other one on the same antibiotic - sounds likely it's also strep!

Once she has had just 12 hours on it, she's usually fever free and feeling okay, and also not vomiting anymore.

I hope that is what it is, and your kids are better soon!!

I would second this. Though most docs would want a strep test before prescribing meds. I would be cautious on the plane though.

You can try and change your trip dates, but it's probably going to be very expensive changing airline tickets.

Great idea...not. If we were to fly, it would cost roughly $1500. Not many folks have an extra $1500 (definitely more since it's last minute)laying around to change flights like that. Not to mention the change in resort dates and whatnot....I'm guessing MOST everything regarding a disney trip is non-refundable. Kids get sick, it's a part of life. I say with the antibiotics and pushing fluids, plenty of hand sanitizer...and as long as it's "only" strep, than they'll be fine. Our little one was sick for the first few days of our trip last year because he was cutting 3 molars at once. Started getting sick the day before we left. I never once considered canceling and losing out on a few thousand bucks. Hope they're better very soon!

I did call the airline - we bought the lowest class ticket so it is not changeable. There isn't anything left flying out from where we live anyways. Our tix cost $2600 so I really don't want to lose it. I feel terrible because I always keep my kids home when they are sick, so I feel so torn!

DD drank a little more water this evening, and DS has stopped throwing up so I am going to hope for the best! Thanks for all the advice - I had no one else to cry to!

Try and get seats near the bathroom on your flight, bring Tylenol and benedryl so your kids can sleep, make sure you have change of clothes for all kids and you!

You can typically change even non-refundable flights for a fee. Usually around $75 a ticket. Not a small sum, but certainly not $1500.

I would also think that once your child stops throwing up they still won't feel up to touring WDW. Are you going to fly that far to sit in the hotel room? Wouldn't your child be more comfortable at home?

I'm sorry but there is no way I would take a child, if they are still throwing up, onto an airplane. And actually if the gate agent notices you have a sick child they will not allow them on the aircraft anyway.

I would start checking now into postponing the trip. Disney won't charge you any fee for moving resort dates. The only fee you would have to pay is whatever fee the airline charges for changing tickets. No way would I take a child that sick onto an aircraft. It would be beyond miserable for them, and not great for anyone else either.

if they appear sick, you can be refused boarding at the airport. it has happened to friends and it was on the way home so they had to pay to stay until kids where cleared to fly

Medicine (prescription and OTC) are exempt from the 3-1-1 rules. Just put them in their own ziplock and declare them to the TSA.

Get a rapid strep test! The kids won't be contagious after 24 hours on antibiotics and if they are like my kids they will perk up after the Tylenol or Motrin kicks in.

Hopefully it's one of those 24 hour puking virus's - it's going around here.

I'd still go unless they were vomiting every hour.

I was going to say the same...I remember having strep as a kid and I don't remember it lasting very long at all. But I totally agree with this post ^

My advice is to be sure that the Dr has checked the kids ears along with their throats. With the ears, nose & throat being an all in one kind of thing.. The last thing you need is a child who is already feeling under the weather, suffering with their ears while flying as well.

So you would be ok sitting next to a vomiting feverish child for eight hours? There is a reason trip insurance exists and this is the reason. For around $125 you can insure your trip so you lose nothing if you have to change or cancel. If you can't afford to change a trip last minute it's foolish not to have insurance. It's cruel to bring a vomiting child onto a plane, for the child an everyone around them. Cutting molars is not vomiting. And there is a nasty stomach big going around parts of the us. So it may not be "just strep". Not to mention "just strep" can have complications like Scarlett fever, not something you want to deal with on vacation. But hey, its really all about you isn't it.
