Posted this on CB board as well, please post your favorite immitaion/quality brands for just about anything you use...clothes, household cleaners, laundry, make up , jewelry, gasoline, food, I am looking for any helpful suggestions and also was wondering af many of us choose the same "knock-off" brands, and advice for those brands to stay AWAY from!

Hmm...I am the store brand queen. It's very unusual for me to actually have a brand name product unless it's a loss leader.

Household cleaners: I've had good luck with almost every cleaner I've tried. I haven't found too many bad private label or knockoff cleaners, though I haven't been too thrilled with the Method cleaners from Target. You would be very surprised what just plain water or baking soda will do around the house. Unless I need to disinfect, water, baking soda, and sponge do great.

Laundry: I use Purex. I used to splurge on Tide, but I've found that Purex works just as well and I can usually get it for $2.00-$2.50 for a 100 oz bottle.

Make up: I've found Jane cosmetics to be surprisingly good. I've gottten great eyeshadows, blushes, and eye/lip liners from them. I've also had good luck with Cover Girl powders, and their clear mascara is great (doubles as a brow gel too!). I rarely wear lipstick, so my $1 Smackers glosses work great and are fun! One tip, though--if you wear foundation, buy the best you can afford. I've found a real difference in coverage, smoothness, etc. between discount and premium foundation.

Gasoline: I'm not fussy about this. The best priced gas I've found are at the gas stations connected to my grocery stores.

Food: I will generally buy the cheapest canned fruit and vegetables I can find. Same with dry pasta. I will usually buy those kind of staples at Aldi. I don't know if you have Safeway or Albertson's stores where you live but both of their private label products have been great for me--sometimes I even like them better than the "name" brand. (Anyone who's ever eaten Albertson's Presidents Choice chocolate chip cookies knows what of I speak...)

I'm curious to see what others use...

I always buy the cheapest (store brand... whatever) flour and sugar. I'm not a grand baker, but can't tell the difference.

I never buy premium gasoline. I wonder who does and why?

Maybelline mascara works fine for me.

... that's all I can think of.

My ancient car needed premium gas to run smoothly. You could really tell the difference if you put in regular. I could get away with using the mid-grade about every other or every third fillup, but anything more than that and my engine complained.

Maybe I spoiled it when it was new because the users manual said to use premium and I did for several years.

Our grocery store Super Fresh has a good store brand called America's Choice.

I like the clothing label Merona at Target. The kids clothes by Cherokee and Circo at Target are good, too.

I totally agree about the makeup- Loreal foundation is worth the money but most lipstick, eyeliner... can be the pretty cheap stuff. I could never pay department store prices for makeup although I have friends who can't live without their Clinique.

This is a great idea for a thread.

Dollar Tree carries a concentrated cleanser called Awesome. That one bottle yields several bottles b/c you mix it with water. The amazing this is that it is really AWESOME.

We like the safeway brand frozen foods. Their appetizers are great, spinach cheese puffs, and a few others. Also, DH really really likes their frozen chinese food- it comes in those little fold up chinese takeout containers. I've had some of their frozen meals too, the kind that are like the stouffers or lean cuisine. Even their lowfat, healthy ones are very good. And they go onsale fairly often.

Safeway, actually has a lot of good safeway brand stuff-- but it is usually comparable in price, but very good.

Dollar Tree is my best friend and enemy all at the same time!! LOL!

I do love their bathroom bleach gel and blaech toilet cleaner they work sooooooooooooo good and that is coming from a house with 3 men that have an issue putting the toilet seat down.
Dollar Tree has lots of stuff including laundry baskets, brooms (thank God, since one son like to take mine apat to make jousts), first aid kits, I could go on but if you have one in your neighborhood you should definately go there...oh last thing I love their make remover wipes 40 for a buck, I even like them better than the pond's ones

Good Luck!!!

These suggestions are great!

I use White Rain hair mousee...I've tried every brand you can think of from bargain to salon...and am thrilled that this el cheapo brand gets the job done(well, as good as you can get w/my hair:rolleyes: )

I use a lot of Costco cleaning products...but think I will try the Dollar store ones mentioned

Any store brand ibuprofen works for me...so that's good, and I like Targets pharmacy...WAY less than our Walgreens or Osco or CVS.....even less than Walmart and Meijer...at least for stuff I've needed to fill.

One "bargain" place I did not have luck with nor did DH was For Eyes Optical.....they just do not have a clue on quality eye care/service there.

Any other "loser" things to stay away from?
Keep the suggestions coming!

My 2 boys could spot a "fake" OREO since they were 2! I don't buy them often, but when I do they have to be the real thing. Sometimes I shop at Tom Thumb (Safeway) and I agree, their store brand is pretty good.

Their version of OREO is called Tuxedo's and my boys will actually eat them! They are much cheaper than OREO's which run $3 a package.

Funny you should mention Oreos. My DS loves them and has one in his lunch just about every day. One day I got the Sam's Choice brand at Wallyworld and he scarfed them. Didn't seem to notice the difference. DH thinks they taste like real Oreos and I like paying $1.50 for them.

The Sam's Choice peanut butter cups and caramel cups are positively addicting. I have to send care packages to my sister who doesn't live near a Walmart (can you believe there's a town they haven't taken over?) But do not, under any circumstances, try their brand of Cheetos. The horror, the horror...

I buy almost everything offered generically at Wal-Mart under their name Great Value. To date the only thing I have found to be "not-the-same" is the stove top stuffing...not bad considering I have tried it all.

Also: Lisa May lip glosses are .49 and work as well as any others I have tried

Hope this helps!

Has anyone used Kirkland (Costco's brand) laundry detergent? I haven't tried it - yet. I buy alot of Costco brand items, shampoo, conditioner, dishwasher liquid (but I don't think it smells good), kids chewable vitamins, etc. Costco's brand of Zantac is a great deal too - if you have to take Zantac (DH does). Zantac brand was 120 for $19.85, Costco brand 240 for $5.99. They have great bargains - I love that place. Also, Costco brand milk was $2.39 for a gallon yesterday, I paid $3.99 at the grocery store last week.

No Costco here but within the last month or two Consumer Reports rated their laundry detergent excellent in all categories (I think it was the only one that got all excellents) and rated it a Best Buy.

I love the Equate (walmart) version of shampoo that is like Pantene proV. My hair can not tell the difference.

The only thing we can not use off brands on is Mac and cheese. Nobody seems to like any brand but kraft.

My 7yr old DD LIVES on Kraft Easy Mac, which is a little pricey, so once I tried the Wal-Mart brand. YUCK!!! It was so bad none of us would eat it, and I had to throw out almost the entire box. We learned our lesson on that one; you're not saving money if you don't eat what you buy!

This is a great thread. I buy lots of brand name things...for example skin care products. I use clinique and Estee Lauder and also expensive foundation.

However, Dollar Tree is great for so many things...I get tons of non-food items there that you would typically buy at the grocery store including.....

soap, shampoo, body lotion, cleaners, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing detergent.

One really typically expensive item that I find at Dollar Tree is cat litter. They have this one brand, don't know what it's called, but it works well and a big bag is only a buck. Compare that to 4-6 dollars for name brand. It's just sand for goodness sake!

I also get sunglasses at Dollar Tree. I lose mine all the time. I have this one pair that I love and honestly you can't tell the difference between them and a $100 pair.

I also get feminine hygiene products there. A 10 count box of tampax normally cost about $3.

You get the idea. I figure I save about $50/month shopping at Dollar Tree...maybe more.

Walmart's "White Cloud" toilet paper and baby wipes are really nice and thick. Love them. Wasn't really psyched about their dish detergent tho.
