My personal favorite is "Oh Tom the Toad"

Oh Tom the Toadto the tune of "Oh Christmas Tree

O Tom the Toad, O Tom the Toad
Why are you lying in the road?
O Tom the Toad, O Tom the Toad
Why are you lying in the road?
You did not see that car ahead
And now you are all squashed and dead.
O Tom the Toad, O Tom the Toad
Why are you lying in the road?

O Jake the Snake, O Jake the Snake
You did not see my garden rake.
O Jake the Snake, O Jake the Snake
You did not see my garden rake.
You used to be all long and slick
And now you are all red and ick
O Jake the Snake, O Jake the Snake
You did not see my garden rake.

O Matt the Rat, O Matt the Rat
Why did you tease my pussycat?
O Matt the Rat, O Matt the Rat
Why did you tease my pussycat?
You used to be all brown and slim
And now you are inside of him
O Matt the Rat, O Matt the Rat
Why did you tease my pussycat?

:dance3:

Hee hee! That's a funny song!

I think my favorite camp song is

A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut,
Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut.
A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut,
Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut.
McDonalds, McDonald's.
Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut.

A Taco Bell, a Taco Bell,
Burger King and a Taco Bell.
A Taco Bell, a Taco Bell,
Burger King and a Taco Bell.
Oh Wendy's, oh Wendy's,
Burger King and a Taco Bell.

Alka Seltzer, oh Alka Seltzer,
TUMS, and an Alka Seltzer.

Can't remember the rest! But that song was always fun to sing!

I liked Alice the Camel and Little Bunny Foo Foo

I wish I could find a website that listed the lyrics for all those great camp songs I learned as a girl scout years ago. I need off the wall songs to teach DS.

Thanks.
I've copied a bunch down that I found and stored them in a file so that I can teach them to DS.

The noble Captain Kirk,
He had 500 men.
He beamed them up to the Enterprise,
And he beamed down again.
And when they're up, they're up,
And when they're down, they're down,
And when they're only halfway up,
They're nowhere to be found.

We're campers
we're hikers
we're a long way from home
if the neighbors don't like us they leave us alone
we eat when we're hungry we drink when we're dry
if the skeeters don't get us we'll live until we die
HEY!

O'Rielly is dead and his brother don't know it
His brother is dead and O'Rielly don't know it
They're both of them dead
And they're in the same bed
And neither one knows that the other is dead

The stars at night go twink-a-linka-link away up in the sky
The moon at night goes blink-a-link-a-link sometimes I wonder why
The skunk at night goes stink-a-link-a-link oh-me-oh-me-oh-my
Oh twink-a-link-a-link
Oh blink-a-link-a-link
Oh stink-a-link-a-link oh my

That's all I got.

The Other Day I Met a Bear!!!!
My family loved this song so much that when we drove across Canada we made up new words. My sister and I were 6 and 7 at the time.

The other day
The other day
I met a bear
I met a bear
In tennis shoes
In tennis shoes
A dandy pair
A dandy pair
The other day I met a bear
In tennis shoes a dandy pair, a dandy pair

They were white
They were white
With polka dots
With polka dots
And you could tell
And you could tell
He wore them lots
He wore them lots
They were white with polka dots
And you could tell he wore them lots, he wore them lots

That's all I remember but the storyline had us trading him our ballet slippers for his tennis shoes. To this day we can drive our mom crazy just my humming the tune. It gets stuck in her head and drives her nuts for days! We are truly evil children.

Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
itsy,bitsy bloody feet

Great green gobs of percolated pelican puke
And *I* forgot my spoon
...but I didn't forget my straw <sluuurp>
Ahhh!

When you see the hearse go by
You know that you'll be the next to die
They wrap you up in bloody sheets
And throw you into the 6 feet deeps
The worms crawl in
The worms crawl out
The worms play pinochle on your snout
One little worm was very shy
He crawled in my ear and he ate my eye!
Your stomach turns a slimy green
Your guts fall out like honey and cream
You slap them on a piece of bread
and that's what you have for lunch with you're dead!

Never heard of it, but thanks for posting the lyrics and tune - I love it! :p

Far too many “favorites” to list, but among many others:

Freely, Freely
Jehovah Jireh
Seek Ye First
King of Kings

Oh, and this little ditty I don’t recall all the lyrics for (and what bits I remember may not be quite right) :

(Tune: The Monkees Theme)

Here we come
Walkin’ down the lane
Got the funniest looks from
The campers when they came

Hey-hey, we’re the counselors
The kids say we boss ‘em around
But we’re too busy screamin’
To put anybody down
We’re jus’ try’n to be friendly
‘N’ catch a few Z’s when we can
If you’re not quiet at campfire
You’re gonna catch the back o' my hand

-------------------------------------

The versions I learned of a couple songs mentioned by other posters:

O’Leary is dead ’n’ O’Reilly don’ know it
O’Reilly is dead ‘n’ O’Leary don’ know it
They’re both lying dead
Neither one knows it
They’re both lying dead in the very same bed
Brrrrroooom, brrrrroooom, brrrooom, brroom, brroom

O’Reilly is dead ’n’ O’Leary don’ know it
O’Leary is dead ‘n’ O’Reilly don’ know it
They’re both lying dead
Neither one knows it
They’re both lying dead in the very same bed
Brrrrroooom, brrrrroooom, brrrooom, brroom, brroom

************

The other day (the other day)
I met a bear (I met a bear)
A great big bear (a great big bear)
A-way out there (a-way out there)
The other day I met a bear
A great, big bear a-way out there

He looked at me (he looked at me)
I looked at him (I looked at him)
He sized up me (he sized up me)
I sized up him (I sized up him)
He looked at me, I looked at him
He sized up me, I sized up him

He said to me (he said to me)
“Why don’t you run? (why don’t you run?)
I see you ain’t (I see you ain’t)
Got any gun” (got any gun)
He said to me, “Why don’t you run?
I see you ain’t got any gun”

And so I ran (and so I ran)
Right out of there (right out of there)
But right behind (but right behind)
Me was that bear (me was that bear)
And so I ran right out of there
But right behind me was that bear

Ahead of me (ahead of me)
I saw a tree (I saw a tree)
A great, big tree (a great, big tree)
Oh, lucky me! (oh, lucky me!)
Ahead of me I saw a tree
A great, big tree, oh, lucky me!

The nearest branch (the nearest branch)
Was ten feet up (was ten feet up)
I’d have to jump (I’d have to jump)
And trust my luck (and trust my luck)
The nearest branch was ten feet up
I’d have to jump and trust my luck

And so I jumped (and so I jumped)
Into the air (into the air)
But I missed that branch (but I missed that branch)
A-way up there (a-way up there)
And so I jumped into the air
But I missed that branch a-way up there

Now don’t you fret (now don’t you fret)
Now don’t you frown (now don’t you frown)
‘Cause I caught that branch (‘cause I caught that branch)
On the way back down (on the way back down)
Now don’t you fret, and don’t you frown
‘Cause I caught that branch on the way back down

That’s all there is (that’s all there is)
There ain’t no more (there ain’t no more)
Unless I meet (unless I meet)
That bear once more (that bear once more)
That’s all there is there ain’t no more
Unless I meet that bear once more

"Pink Pajamas"
(sung to the tune of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic".

Oh I wear my pink pajamas in the summer when it's hot,
And I wear my flannel nighties in the winter when it's not.
I love those days in springtime and I love those days in fall,
When sometimes I crawl through the sheets with nothing on at all.

Glory, Glory, for the summer.
Glory, Glory, for the winter.
Glory, Glory, for the springtime and the fall,
When sometimes I crawl through the sheets with nothing on at all.

"Long Johns"
(sung to the tune of Bye, Bye, Blackbird)

I just lost my underwear; I don't care; I'll go bare.
Bye, Bye, Long Johns.
They were very dear to me, tickled me, hee hee hee.
Bye, Bye, Long Johns.

How I miss that trap door that's behind me.
If you see them please be sure and find me.

I just lost my underwear; I don't care; I'll go bare.
Long Johns . . . Bye, Bye.

I still get a cozy feeling when I hear Kumbaya. I think of campfires and s'mores. :goodvibes

I also liked minkydog's Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts

Your mama don't wear no socks, a deem dum
I saw her when she took them off, a deem dum
She threw them in the air
Now Superman don't fly up there

a deem dum, dum, dum

It goes on from there

bed, trash, sink others that I can't remember right now!!

The Bumblebee song

I can't believe I found the lyrics. When I went to camp decades ago, I loved this song:

We're from Nairobi Our team is a good one We play the Watusi They're seven feet tall The cannibals may eat us But they'll never beat us Cause we're from Nairobi And we're on the ball Umgawa, umgawa, umgawa, umgawa Umgawa, umgawa, umgawa, Umgawa, umgawa, umgawa, umgawa Umgawa, umgawa, umgawa Black as sin Weaned on gin We're the boys who're bound to win Naaiii-ro-biii!!

Greasy, grimy gopher guts was definitely a hit, but the all-time favorite was Chicken (not to be confused with the Chicken Dance). DSis and I still sing it sometimes to torture poor unsuspecting (but deserving) souls or to make my kids laugh.

The Chicken Song

C, that's the way it begins.
H, I'm the second letter in.
I, I am the third
And C I'm the fourth letter in that word
Oh K, I'm fillin in.
E, I'm near the N
Oh C-H-I-C-K-E-N
That's the way you spell Chi-cken

Roofus, Raffus Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes round?
Whatcha gonna say?
Whatcha gonna pay?
Whatcha gonna do on that Judgment Day?
Cuz you know, I know, rent means dough?
Whatcha gonna do when you're out in the snow?
Oh, Roofus, Raffus Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes round?

Then for the third verse, one person (or group) sings Chicken while the other sings Roofus Raffus. It's great.

We loved to sing The Cat Came Back. :) Little Rabbit Foo Foo was another favorite.

Thanks for posting the first site! I can't believe some of these songs that I can remember over 20 years after getting out of GS! I was in for 12 years and learned a ton of them. Seeing the words written down is funny though! There are some that we didn't know the right words to...like The Princess Pat. I just taught DD that one & remember the hand motions. Gosh campfires were alot of fun! :)

The version of minky's that we learned.

Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts
mutilated monkey meat, little birdies dirty feet
french fried eyeballs rolling down the dirty street
and I forgot my spoon.

Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher gust
mutilated monkey meat, little birdies dirty feet
french fried eyeballs rolling down the dirty street
and I forgot my spoon, but I brought my straw
mmmmmmmm good!
