Our family just returned from another great camping trip at the Fort. It was a bit rainy at the beginning of the week but it did not deter our fun, especially our "Fort Wilderness Train Track Excursion" courtesy of Bama Ed! My DH, and two DS had so much fun on our quest. We were caught in the pouring rain on our bikes and only returned to our site because of lightning. Once it passed, we were back out again. There is a lot of info on the old track on the web so we read up on the history While the rain went by. Here is a picture of my youngest DS next to part of the old track near the 1500 loop.

Now about everything else. The parks were PACKED! Since we are annual passholders it was nice that we could come and go as we pleased and did not feel like we had to cram it all in. We visited the waterparks in the afernoon and I was really surprised how short of a wait the lines were. The longest was 15 minutes. It was so hot I expected to see more people. Nice for us!
Fort Wilderness was very quiet. We were in the 1000 loop with only 4 other families. The 800 loop was closed for maintenance. The 1900 didn't look like it had anyone in it. There were a lot of empty spaces in the other loops as well. Maybe the heat keeps people from camping much in the summer. We love it! Our site, 1015, was shady and quiet and dry. There was alot of standing water from all the rain. We rented Sa Acers one of the days and had a lot of fun. Saw the Cirque Du Solie show which we enjoyed. It was a great week and we are looking forward to going back in August for my two DD's soccer tournament and in the fall for another trip. We love the Fort!!!

DS is standing near the 1500 loop where the FWRR tracks crossed over the road after running behind the 1200/1300 loops and then crossed the canal before heading down along the water towards 300 loop.

As a fan of steam trains I love the FWRR memories. I hope your family <found> some railroad spikes during their stay at the Fort. There are a lot of historical reminders at the Fort about the RR whether its in people's memories or in physical reminders.

I never rode the FWRR but I have ridden steam trains annually for over 25 years all over the East Coast and I can imagine what the smell of oil mixed with Florida humidity must have been like back in the 70s.

I've found most of the FWRR remnants there are left at the Fort so I am glad the circle is widening. The more FWRR the better. :crowded:
