I had our mail held while we were gone over Christmas. It was to be delivered yesterday. We got home last night and there was nothing in the mailbox. I thought maybe I'd written down the wrong date and it would come today. No biggie.
About 7:00pm I get a phone call from someone who's dd used to skate at dd's club but has since graduated. THEY got our mail!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a couple of streets over and a completely different street name, but same house number. The Mom noticed I got a bunch of stuff from other clubs and realized I must be doing registration for our competition in February. She said she would drop the mail off and she did.
Ok, here's the deal... The post office has screwed up before. I order things and they never show up, even though the company assures me it was sent. I often get mail for others on my street.
But this time it was 5 days worth of mail!! Bills, Christmas letters, and all those registrations!!!!!!!! I could have had 8 Synchro teams show up and I wouldn't have been expecting them!
WWYD? Lodge another complaint with the PO or let it go?

When we went on our cruise in May we had the mail stopped or so we thought. Thankfully my MIL went by the house and saw mail. She also happened to be there when the Mail deliverer was there and she got it all corrected. Grrrrr. I didn't have to complain because believe me MIL took care of it. I was afraid I would never receive my mail again because of what she told us she said. But all is well.

I don't know if I would complain or not. I always worry that something important could be "lost" if ya know what I mean. I always think of Newman on Seinfeld.

The time before last I had my mail held. I said I would pick it up when we got home. Some mail was delivered though and sat in my mailbox for a week. Some was held at the post office.

Last time we went away I again said I would pick it up when we got home (I do this because if we are delayed then I don't have a whole weeks worth of mail sitting in my box). Anyways before I left I hung a note on the inside of my box stating that the mail was being held for pickup. My mailman also said if you rubberband shut the box its a sign that mail isn't to be delivered.

Ok, but here's my thing...WHY should we have to do more than fill out the card? Why can't they get it right?
I was fortunate that my mail went to someone who understood how important some of it was and didn't just throw it away.

Because mistakes happen. I would rather take a couple minutes to leave a note than worry during my vacation about my mail.

4s that is what I will do if we stop our mail for our next vacation. It depends on if MIL wants to stay at our house or wants us to bring the cat to her.

We tried the stop mail thing once. Maybe they're supposed to be done in pig latin?

Now we have a good relationship with our mailman and he knows when we're on vacation. He drops our mail off at my inlaws in the same neighborhood. Or if the ILs are with us, he'll hold it for us. It's not exactly legal, but I don't think he's supposed to be sleeping with some of the ladies on his route either?

Ok, so here's another thought... The whole idea of holding the mail is so you don't have a bunch in there to signify to burglars that no one is home, right? So if you put a rubber band around your mailbox, isn't that like putting a big ol' sign out that says "We're not home!"?
Maybe I'm just extra snarky because they've screwed up so many times with us and we've had a couple of houses broken into in the neighborhood.

I see what your saying but unless the burglar goes up to inpect your mailbox they are not going to see it. Just wrap it around those two hooky things to keep it shut. I've done it, its not noticeable.

Our mailboxes are on the street, not up at the house.

I really am snarky today.

We go on vacation a lot and have had multiple run-ins with our local postal service. They don't hold the mail when we've requested or they don't bring it back when we've requested. They also deliver to every one of our neighbors up and down the street, but that is a different issue. We have now opted for a PO box and so far it's been all good. No worries and no neighbors opening my bills or puny little pay stubs.

I'm gonna stick the note IN the mailbox, not do the rubberband thing.

The worst is when people forget to stop their newspaper delivery. Nothing screams "NOBODY IS HOME" than a week's worth of newspapers in the driveway.

Well dont' get me started on the newspaper.... Ok, too late....
They stopped all the papers, except for Monday's. So it sat by our front door until last night.:sad2:

I've just come to the conclusion that somebody is trying to tell me to stop going to my mil's house. :thumbsup2

We have always had good luck having our mail stopped, our issues have been with the newspaper. They have never gotten our vacation stop done. We usually come home to a drive-way full of wet newspapers.

I agree.

We stop delivery online, and also leave a note for the carrier (to take). So far, it has worked fine. I personally wouldn't leave any sign that I wasn't home, ie, a mailbox with a rubberband on it or a note inside the box that was intended to stay there. If there's any indication to a burglar that we might not be home (ie, cars staying in the same location), I don't want to confirm it for them. JMHO However, I also inform the police when we're not going to be home, and they check on the house daily, including a walkaround the perimeter of the house.

Also, regarding stopping both mail and newspaper deliveries...we have them stop delivery a day before we actually leave, so that if we still do get delivery that day, we can contact them and correct the situation.

This reminds me I have to figure out what to do when we go away next. We had such a bad experience last time. They did a good job of stopping it, but it took days to start it up again. I went to the post office and it took them 30 minutes to find out mail. Ugh!

OK, I forgot to add taht $2000 worth of checks were in that mail that was delivered to someone else. What if that had gotten into the hands of someone who would have found a way to cash them?:scared1:
