Post Office close for lunch?

In our small town, it's not uncommon for the post office to close at random times because the post-mistress needs to be out for a bit. She's usually the only one behind the counter. It sucks if that random time happens to be when you had a chance to run in. But it's not a scheduled lunch break.

Had a conversation with someone today that started with them asking me if I knew what time our local post office closed for lunch. I've never heard of such a thing. To be fair, most of the post offices I've been two have a minimum of two people working the window, so I would understand if a small rural post office needed to close to allow the only employee working a break. But your average post office with two or more windows typically open? Isn't "running to the post office " one of those errands people typically do during lunch breaks?

Many businesses require at least three people working to avoid a lunch closure. We have locations that have two employees and since you can never work with just one, which would happen if the other was at lunch, we have to close those locations for lunch.

I go to the post office so infrequently at this point I'm not sure if they close for lunch or not. The box in front doesn't.

The last five years at the post office I worked at, they usually would not let the other clerk work down there with me. They would determine how many 'man hour's were needed and use that to fill bigger and busier post offices leaving smaller ones like mine only staffed with one person. So, yes I had to close each day for lunch. Needless to say that made many unhappy!
On the other hand like many here, looks like all three of the various pharmacies in our area that we use also close each day for lunch. Like my office did though, they do choose an hour not at the 12:00 time knowing ppl hit those during their lunch breaks.

We live in a village and have a post office box. Our post office closes from noon to 1 M-F.

I’ve lived in many rural towns where the post office counter closes for lunch. This means if you need a packaged retrieved or weighed for payment you had to wait.
