Post all SW questions concerns, etc. here...

Our flight home from MCO dropped by $56 per person from what I paid. I had also purchased seat upgrades. When I cancelled the original flight to take advantage of the discount, I lost the price I paid for the seat upgrades. I didn't realize that it wasn't refundable.

Yup unfortunately they are not refundable just like early bird check in was not if you cancel.

Did you "Modify" or actually "Cancel" I'm not sure if it would make a difference as my CC gives us preferred seat selection at booking.

I changed a flight on 11/9 which I had purchased with points and added payment for seats and I received a refund for the seats when I changed flight to get discount price.

I have the SWA Priority Card and haven't spent enough for all of my $75 annual travel credit to apply to my account. From what I understand, this benefit will expire 12/31/25, even though my card doesn't AF doesn't charge me until May 2026. Is that right? I am thinking about just upgrading from a priority seat to an extra legroom seat so we can use it up and not let it waste. Will that work to get the credit back? Also, can flight credits be used to pay for upgrading seats?

Presumably the seat upgrade will work, but so will buying a SW gift card directly from the SW site. That's what I've done when I needed to hit the $75 before I had natural spend coming up, and then that GC can be used for the taxes and fees on points bookings or for cash bookings.

When booking using points, can you still get a refund on the points if the fare goes down and you rebook?

Yes, done it several times. If it's Basic, you have to cancel and rebook but make sure there's enough seats. If it's anything else, you can just modify and points refund as well.

I selected "change flight" rather than cancel. I don't know if it makes a difference.

I bought a Choice ticket which includes standard seating. I have the SW Premier card which let me select a preferred seat for a small additional fee.

I am curious about your refund. Did you buy a Choice Preferred ticket?

I think I bought the Choice ticket and than paid extra for a preferred seat than modified seat to a standard seat…my confirmation number is the same as before I changed seat so I must have just changed seat but didn’t change flight and used points for flight.
Nope that can’t be right because I do see a point refund too. Darn I don’t know what I did but I see a point refund and a refund (credit) for seat change and I went from a preferred seat to a standard seat.

I booked out flights. We have assigned seats. Do we still need to check in 24 hours in advance?
You have to check in sometime before you go through security, it is available at 24 hours. For other airlines, I usually check in whenever I notice the notification in the app.

*****ETA was just able to move us back one row to row 2 for both legs. Backpacks can now go under the seat. This should solve the potential issue without additional cost. I think. Thank you! ********

I’m very lost. For a quick February trip I just booked round trip on basic fares but bought front row upgraded seats.

When will I board? Based on the seat or the fare? If it’s dead last so be it at least we’ll know we are getting seats up front and we will just have backpacks as it’s a weekend trip.

Suppose boarding last with front seat could be an issue with needing to putting the backpack in the overhead since there’s no seat in front. Ugh.

If you don't have a CC or status so the boarding is based off of the fare you bought the way it reads is you'd be last to board but you could pay for the priority boarding (which is the same for the other fare classes that they could pay for the priority boarding).

SW should teach a class on booking a seat. So confusing. What I have learned so far is basic seats are really no more cost effective than others because everything is an add on unless you don’t care where you sit, have no carryon luggage or do not care when you board.

That's what basic has been about for other airlines for years, for a reduction in price for the base fare and you give up certain things.

As someone who used to exclusively purchase WGA I get it but when they switched to basic we no longer bought the lowest fare. My husband who flies often for work would buy WGA until WGA+ came around. When WGA switched to Basic his company's travel portal prohibited that fare from being bought (it won't show as an option).

SWA went the way of other carriers and changed what their lowest fare meant. It's not designed to be cost effective for people who want "stuff" but meant to be cost effective for people who don't want/care about "stuff". I don't particularly like the change but yeah. Stuff here means boarding position and less earnings for points, no choice in seat, overhead bin space is not part of it (you're not being charged for a carry on) but one can say your chance of having overhead bin space reduces the further back in boarding you are. Then there's restrictions on flexibility/changing the ticket.

The exception though is if you have the Credit Card you can pick up these things. If you only fly once a year it might not be worth it but if you do multiple times or have multiple people on the reservation it can certainly pay for itself.

Thanks. We do have a basic Southwest card so I’ll check into it.
