Post all SW questions concerns, etc. here...

Chase won't approve you unless you're eligible for the bonus.
They can approve you without you being eligible for the bonus. The eligibility of the credit card would be based on the 5/24 rule and credit score, etc, and the bonus is different. I think sometimes there is a pop up alerting the person and other times not but you're not necessarily going to get a hard decline on the credit card if the issue is ineligibility with the bonus

I'm wondering if we might want to create a separate thread discussing the SW CC and keep this thread dedicated to the other portions of the airline, flights, etc.

I understand this is an everything SW thread so I might be wrong but it seems the discussions are all about cc recently rather than the airline.

Just a thought.

The Credit Card thread that already exists has lots of very well informed folks who know all the ins and outs of the Chase CC rules. Might be good for folks who are considering an app to swing over there. I'd worry that a new thread wouldn't have the correct eyes on it to get good answers...

I agree with you about a new thread, often people answer who aren't familiar enough with SWA (I've noticed that) but at the very least I wouldn't want it being prohibited to be discussed here on this thread. That other thread is just generic talks of ccs and thus contains talk about other airlines, banks, products, etc and it's entirely possible you'll get answers from people talking about how something used to be not how it is now. So if people ask on that other thread it would be good for them to post back on here to give the information for people who are not on that other thread and for people who are newer to SWA or are returning to SWA.

SWA is basically being entirely overhauled as an airline so credit card talk including the bonuses are pretty important at the moment to be discussed as everyone is learning the new way of SWA and SWA is tying perks differently than before (i.e. more impactful) to their credit cards.

I would like to cancel and reapply, but we have had the Southwest card for almost 20 years. Not sure what the impact on my credit score would take. Also income is now based on retirement income. Not sure if that has an effect when applying for a new card.
Unless that is your oldest card by a large margin, or you have very few lines of credit, the effect to your credit score will be negligible. The only categories it affects are Age of Oldest Open Account and total credit utilization percentage.

There should not be a need to cancel your card.

You should be able to apply for a different SW card and be eligible for the bonus as it is technically a different card.
If you have a Priority card apply for one of the lower tier cards and then after a year cancel that one keeping your old card and credit limit intact.

If you want the priority card then apply for that one (assuming that is not the one you currently hold) after a year cancel the new card and if the Priority benefits were worth while to you Product Change your 20 year card to the Priority one to keep those benefits.

If you currently have a personal card, SW does not allow you to open a different personal card. You have to either upgrade or cancel the 1 you already have. They used to allow it, but no longer do.

Plus, the bonus offer specifies you can’t be a current SW CC holder. From the offer on the SW website:

“This product is available to you if you do not have a current Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card and have not received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.”
