I am a cruise novice and I do not know all the booking policies. We are currently booked on thr Magic out of Miami on Feb 18. Party is 3 adults and 2 kids. Per TA suggestion, one room is 1 adult and 1 kid, and the other is two adults one kid. We are now thinking of adding my dad to the cruise. Online it looks like there is capacity. Could we move one of the adults to his reservation?

If I'm understanding correctly, you want to drop one of the adults from your reservation and add him to your dad's? As long as you are not concierge and outside the final window, it is pretty straightforward to cancel someone (as long as they aren't the lead in the room) and add them to a new reservation. BUT they will be added at the prevailing rate. Always easiest just to call the TA and explain what you want to do (at least in my experience). Also, everything is subject to space requirements in lifeboats (or so I'm told).

When adding people to existing reservations DCL asks 3 questions:
1) Is there space in the room for more people (can't put 4 people in a 3 person room).
2) Is there space in the lifeboat assigned to that room (lifeboat capacity can be reached, even if all available beds in a given room are not filled).
3) Is there space in the appropriate kid's cub (if applicable).

If the answer to any of these questions is "no" then an additional person cannot be added.

I will also point out that the new person on any existing reservation pays the current price for the cruise, not the price they would have paid had they been on the original booking.

PP is correct -- if you want to add a 3rd stateroom with dad plus one of the adults, you would be cancelling 1 adult from one of the currently booked staterooms and rebooking that person into a stateroom with dad. It will be prevailing rates. Overall, less expensive than having dad pay the single supplement but could be more expensive for that other adult if fares have increased since your initial booking. Also be aware that by shifting one of the adults out and leaving 1 adult + 1 kid, the kid moves up to full fare.

If you don't mind sharing 2 staterooms, you can add dad to one of the currently booked staterooms, assuming capacity for the room and lifeboat. I suggest the room that already has 3 guests because he can be added at a lower 3rd/4th passenger rate. Then you can shift who sleeps where once onboard.

If the dad will have his own room, it will be the easiest to cancel the kid in the reservation with three people and add to the dad's. I assume the dad is currently paying 2x the double occupancy fare just to have the room to himself? You will also have to check for lifeboat capacity to add someone to his room.

Once on board, you can redo the sleeping arrangements as you prefer.
