Possible Myeloma Diagnosis.

My doctor is sending me to a specialist for a second opinion but they think I may have myeloma. My father thinks they're overreacting b/c there was a high protein count in my blood. He usually has a high count due to diabetes 2 and kidney stones both of which I have had too. I feel fine and just had an immune system test done a few months ago and everything was normal. Does anyone know anything about this disease or who has it so I might know what to expect? I'm kind of thrown for a loop right now and it's really bad b/c we're supposed to go to Disney for the weekend and I'm now paranoid.

Are you talking about Multiple Myeloma? If so, my SIL has it. She's had a lot of pain in her bones for several years and it took a knot coming up on her rib last fall before she was correctly diagnosed. She was treated at MD Anderson cancer hospital in Houston and had a stem cell transplant in February. She is just now starting to feel better and is in remission now.

I truly hope the doctors are wrong about your diagnosis. Hopefully it will turn out to be something far less serious than MM. If not though, don't mess around with local/small hospitals but seek out the best cancer hospital you can find, such as MD Anderson. Sometimes when MM is caught in its early stages, they won't start treatment for years. This is a disease that is harder to treat than many cancers, and you want to make sure you go to the very best hospital in the country, even if it means traveling out of state for treatment. Hopefully in your case the high protein count is caused from your diabetes and kidney stones, which is likely since you haven't had any bone pain or other symptoms.

I wish you the very best. Doctors misdiagnose patients all the time, so go to Disney and enjoy yourself!

Don't know anything about it, but here's a hug. Hopefully your father is right and they are simply overreacting. :grouphug:

I hope it turns out to be a false alarm. Prayers and good wishes to you.

I got to talk to the nurse of the doctor I'm going to go see at the cancer center. They were shocked that the primary physician suggested it was myeloma. They said there is something there but it surely isn't that. So, just as a precaution I'm going to go see them on the 24th so they can check me out and make sure this isn't something that's going to cause problems later. I feel better now that I've talked to the specialists office. Thanks for the well wishes. There's something there but at least it's not as bad as I was led to believe.

OP, that it's not MM.

My late mom was diagnosed with that but she was too elderly for bone marrow transplant.

Are you taking any medication that might account for the high protein levels?

TC and I know all too well about MM don't we?

Sometimes MM doesn't show up in regular blood tests - we thought my dad was clear because his protein level was fine but his oncologist said it's a different test for MM...please keep up updated. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
