possible milk protein allergy?

To the OP:

PM me if you want to get any advice. My son has had milk allergy since 9 months, when he had an anaphylactic reaction due to a couple of teaspoons of milk (needed epinephrine). He is now 12 and was part of a research study at Johns Hopkins a couple of years ago; he can now tolerate small amounts of milk safely. He was so bad earlier that he couldn't even touch anything that had had dairly on it, like a table, or he'd get hives.

The losing weight is a big concern to me. It may be an allergy, but they really need to rule out any other possibility. The allergy test is easy; the allergist should order the blood test, called a RAST.

Good luck!

I was concerned about the allergist giving a report to the pediatrician because I feel like I am not trusting her by going to the allergist. (12 years of Catholic school its this weird authority thing I have)

I also remembered the first time I gave her scrambled eggs (with the whites) she got hives and I haven't given them to her since. I found a pediatric allergist about 30 minutes away. Although now with the holiday weekend I won't be able to call til Tuesday. I hope it doesn't take too long for any appt. She is still a bit gassy with the soy formula but she has an easier time getting the gas up. By accident yesterday I gave her these Gerber snacks that were cheese and she had some issues yesterday which makes me think it may not just be the actual milk like the doctor said but all dairy.

Then my Mom thinks I should take her to a gastroenterologist and not an allergist. I'm so confused!

I would definitely call Tuesday, and in the meantime, avoid dairy and egg if I were you. My son is also egg allergic, but his numbers are coming down, so we are hoping he may outgrow it.

The risk is that if it is an allergy, each ingestion MAY have the possibility of a serious reaction. And with each ingestion the possibility can go up.

You pediatrician would send you to an allergist anyway, not think it's something that he or she can handle. I would get a blood test for all common food allergies. It is quick to get, but will take a week or two to get the results.

The hives are a concern - for now, read labels! You can get some help with that at the FAAN website, foodallergy.org. I got their cookbooks years ago, and it helps me make cakes and pancakes without dairy and eggs. They will list ingredients to avoid for now.

Good luck!

PS: I also highly recomment the book my son's allergist wrote, "Food Allergies for Dummies" by Dr. Robert Wood. It had so much information that I wished I'd had when my son was first diagnosed!
