POSSIBLE DEBATE!!!! The Marriage Amendment do you agree?

The Amendment that keeps marriages between a Man and a Women. Do you agree or not?

I would have preferred if you had specified marriage between two consenting adults rather than two people who love each other. You just know someone is going to take that and mess with your words.

I'm leaning towards the government only granting civil unions and that these are between any two consenting adults. Marriage could then be defined as a church, religion, or spiritual group wishes to define it.

In any case, I believe a marriage amendment is a bad idea.

My answer really isn't there - I'm opposed to gay marriages, but I'm also opposed to the current amendment. I think it should be left to the states to decide for themselves.

I agree with AFR. I'm not as staunchly opposed to gay marriages (I prefer them to be considered civil unions), but it certainly isn't something that should be the Constitution.

If churches don't want to perform ceremonies that's their call. Our goverment shouldn't discriminate against any group. Where do these politicians get off making decisions for ME based on THEIR religious beliefs???? WRONG WRONG WRONG.

I honestly cannot see how such an issue belongs in the Constitution of a country founded upon the principals of All Men Being Created Equal where every citizen is entitled to the pursuit life, liberty and happiness.

The morality or immorality of gay/lesbian relationships is best left to the domain church/religion/spirituality. I am all for the Federal Government keeping it's hand out of such matters.

As I've said, I oppose this amendment, but I also want to address what you've said about the politicians making decisions for you...

Congressmen aren't dropped off on the steps of the Capitol by the Tax Fairy. They are elected by people based on what they say they are going to do and based on whether or not their beliefs mesh with the beliefs of the voters. In such a system, it is impossible to ONLY have laws that conform to our own personal beliefs - it just isn't possible. There are always going to be laws with which some people disagree, but too bad, that's they way the system works.

I don't believe for a second that this amendment will pass Congress, but if it does, it will be because the ELECTED representatives vote it through. And if the states ratify it, it will be because the ELECTED state legislators vote it through.

People do have a say on such matters, but indirectly.

I am married, I am not gay, but if I was I'm sure that I would like to marry the person that I was in love with.
