I'd say off by over 100 years isn't exactly the same as off by 5 minutes. But maybe it's just me.

My only intent was to give accurate information on the history of New Orleans. Not sure why you consider it a personal affront.

No. The swamps prevent that kind of thing. Thats why they are below sea level in the first place.

I wonder, though, they will have tons and tons of rubble from all the damage, maybe they can bring a good part of the city up above sea level?

I heard estimates that 75% of the homes have serious damage and may be unlivable. Who will pay to remodel the homes so they are up to code? Who will do all the work? Is there enough tradespeople available to rebuild 100,000 homes in the next few years?

Most of the people have no flood insurance. Will the federal government rebuild everyones home out of general tax revenue. It would cost tens of billions of dollars. Can you picture the red tape to get that done.

I suspect a large amount of the City will never be rebuilt.

While In Fort Myers this past spring we were surprised to hear about how hard it was to still find contractors int hat area from the last big hurricane! I want to know what 'Up To Code' should be their also!
I know that on Fort Myers Beach they changed the code with the stilts - did you see how the water tank 'on stilts' was fine in NO?

So that said I think NO there are not enough Trades People to get it done in a timely manner.

NO was a MAJOR port and needs to be able to maintaine that status - at some level -
but as for building the residential aread as were - i think not -
but they will.

From way up here in the hills of West-by-God-Virginny, it's easy for me to say that they should just let that area go back to the wilds and relocate everyone elsewhere. But we're talking about these people's homes...their entire lives. I don't know that, if it was me living in that area, I would feel anywhere near the same as the me sitting up here in the hills.

There isn't much that I agree with you usually wrevy, but thanks for saying it better then I ever could. Judge all you want folks, but N.O. is home to me. It's where I was born and raised. It's where my DH and I built our careers. It's where we planned to raise our daughter.

I'm really disappointed in some of the things I'm reading right now.

I am sorry for what your friends and families are going through -
I can not REALLY comprehend what is going on and how you all feel -
I am looking at it from my North Eastern veiw point (which I might note that we are not allowed to build on our land becuase it is 'wet lands' meaning ferns live on it) So I can not understand rebuilding where a lake should be.
