I can’t be trusted to google anything. I’m pretty up front about that with my doctor and nurses and they’ve always gone out of their way to print me off information or review it verbally.

I just got a call from the hospital. He had been transferred to another hospital for a specific test, an echo. They now are checking for myocarditis which is an infection in his heart muscles. Seriously, when are we going to catch a break. I made the mistake of googling this and now I’m terrified. We won’t know the results for 24 hours. I know I shouldn’t worry yet because we don’t know yet if that’s what it is but if it is, that’s not good.

I wish my daughter was home. She’s always a good distraction. My family helps, but it’s not the same you know?

Is the myocarditis in addition to the actual bacterial infection he has or are they believing this is the reason for the rest of the issues? If this is in addition to the other bacterial infection, I would being asking for an infectious disease specialist. This specific kind of doctor can help test and get down to the specific kinds of bacteria in the blood with infection and help create the specific solution to fight. Did they tell you the specific infection? Sepsis? Or how it occurred?

I think the hospital was overly liberal to even get you any kind of time frame when dealing with a bacterial infection in the blood. This is not a simple fix of few days of IV fluids and antibiotics. This is something that is going to take lots and lots of time likely to include possibly at home IV antibiotics depending on the level of infection. I know several people that have overcome this but it took lot of therapy and medical intervention at home and in the hospital.

Thank you. When they said a week I think they were under the impression that he would respond well and they knew the only problem and how to fix it. I do know that an infectious disease doctor is part of his team. I believe that this possible myocarditis is in addition to the infection. I don’t know, maybe they don’t know anything. Maybe they suspect something awful and they’re just trying to confirm it. I feel like I was in a daze the last time I talked to his dr so I want to be more alert next time. I want to make sure all my questions are answered (and they have been so far) but I don’t want to worry about 50000 different possibilities.

Honestly, given how serious this sounds, I would be worried about him being in a hospital that can't perform a simple test like an echo in its own facility. Will be staying at the new facility? I would be pushing for it

Our hospitals are centralized. One hospital deals with all cardiac cases.
I would assume Richard was taken there for the test.

What Carrie says below is accurate. Even in a city the size of Winnipeg, it is very likely there only is one echo machine. There will also only be a few MRIs and possibly only one PET scanner in the entire province. Anybody living outside the major centres will have to travel for any specialized service like oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, ect. Access for non-urgent cases can take a very, very long time but that's because in cases like @kimblebee 's DH's, urgent needs get accommodated immediately.

I know everyone is concerned and everyone’s experience is different but he really is getting the best care that we have access to. Doctors could have shrugged their shoulders and just given him a bunch of pills. They are ruling out everything they can in order to find out what it is. If I have to give him a piggy back ride to get him to a far off specialist, I will do it. I will do whatever it takes to fix him because the alternative makes my stomach hurt.

I've been praying for Richard & you, since the you mentioned he was sick. We're all here for you. Don't feel like you need to worry about updating us. Richard should be you primary concern. You also need to take cake of yourself, so you're able to take care of him, when he needs you. We'll be here, when you catch your breath & need someone to talk to. Until then, don't worry about us. We should be your last concern.
