COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- Dozens of beach goers are recovering from the painful sting of man-of-war along Brevard County beaches.
The beaches were covered with Portugese man-of-war Tuesday, but the problem doesn't seem to be as bad now, officials said.
The invasion comes at an uncommonly busy time at Brevard beaches, and as many as 20 people were stung in Indialantic Tuesday, lifeguards said.
"I've seen some people chasing after it, so I started after it too. She had been on the beach and picked up the Portugese man-of-war, and it had stung her in five or six different places, and she just absolutely came unglued," witness Terry Scott said.
One person said the emergency room at a local hospital was packed with beach goers, being treated for stings. The best treatment for stings is ocean water and ammonia, lifeguards said.
Portugese man-of-war have bright, blue bladders that look like small balloons. Their tentacles can reach six or eight feet from the bladder. Normal jellyfish are usually clear in color.
