Hi Ted,
I have been pricing flights since May as I am looking at going next year.
There are three airports worth looking at; Bangor, Portland and Manchester, NH.
Bangor has twice weekly, non-stop service to Sanford Airport through Allegiant Air. It doesn't run all year, but its a pretty good prices, from $225-$300 return in the off season. However, I believe it charges for all baggage. Bangor is about 3.5 hours from Saint John, NB.

You can also fly with the traditional carrirers (Delta, Northwest, etc). However, they tend to more expensive, and usually a connecting flight or 2 involved and the first leg can be on a small plane (12-20 passengers).
Down the road another 2.5 hours, Portland is still a small and manageable airport that besides the traditional, also has Jet Blue and Air Tran. All those flights go through NY/NJ. Typically, the can run $200-$275 return in the off season. They charge for extra luggage (more than 1 per passenger).
Further down the the road another 1.5-2 hours, Manchester, NH, is an airport for Southwest airlines. It has 2-3 direct flights per day plus several connecting or 1-2 stop flights. It can run $180-$275 return in the off season. I typically go there because of the direct flights, no schedule changes and great service. The motel rooms in the area are pretty inexpensive too for Park n' fly.
Boston is also as close as Manchester, but the flights are no cheaper, the rooms are expensive and the traffic is crazy.
Depending on the time of year, you could ferry it from Yarmouth to Portland, saving time behind the wheel. I have heard that isn't a cheap option.
Despite the long drive from your area, I have seen other members who make the trip from NS, the savings are to great to pass up.
