Portable ice maker?

I am curious to know if anyone uses a portable ice maker when you go camping? DH and I are thinking of buying one. I found an ad for one under $200. We're going to be in FW for 3 weeks and know that we'll be buying ice often. We can also use it at home when we have family gatherings etc.

If you do have a portable ice maker what brand is it and are you happy with it?

We were going to buy one also, but found that they are loud and don't really make enough ice to keep up. The turnaround time they give you is for SOFT ice. Also, from what I understand the fort has terrible water, so bring your own. For clear ice, warm the water first, it gets the air out..I hate white ice, but I'm an ice snob, ROFL! I asked my husband if we could bring bags of sonic ice (it's all crushed up). We will be going to walmart mid week to get more ice for our coolers I would guess now. I can tell you that we have a HUGE white cooler, igloo brand, that will keep ice for about 4 days till it really starts melting.

We use to have a portable ice maker that we would hook up outside under the awning and it would take a good day to get the ice but once the ice started to come it was wonferful. I have often wonder how good these new one are, because it seems like we are always needing extra ice and I've seen them advetised to.

We have one and we love it. It makes a tray of ice every 8 minutes or so, and it's very quiet. We take bottled water to pour in it. Our last trip (6 days), we didn't buy a single bag of ice. We kept a tub of ice in the RV freezer and the rest we dumped into our cooler (for canned drinks).

3 Days, 6 Hours, and 33 Minutes til we're back at the Fort for Star Wars Weekend!!!

I ordered a Danby portable ice maker from Walmart on line. They didn't have them in the store. DH and I saw one in Camping world for $327 (before tax). With shipping and tax I still saved $100 dollars ($198 + tax & ship). There was one on sale at Conn's for $179, but by the time I got there they were all gone. Mine will be delivered on the 31st. This will give us enough time to test it out before we leave 2 days later on 6/2/06.

How do they do outside in the heat? How big is this thing? You've peaked my interest

I honestly don't know exactly how big it is. I'm assuming it about 1 1/2 ft. square. We plan to plug it in outside too, under the awning.

I just saw one advertised in the Home Depot Sunday sale paper for $149, by Magic Chef. I wish it had been in last week's paper. Oh well! I spent a bit more

That's the way it goes sometimes.

I'll let y'all know how it works if it gets here when it's supposed to. Actually DH is bringing the lap top so I just might let y'all know how it works while we're there.
