The most recent Walmart ad includes a "Special Buy" 7-inch portable DVD/CD player with car adapter, battery, and case to hang over the seat of the car for $198.76. I'll be taking advantage of this bargain on our first drive to Florida!!

Just one word of caution. We brought a similar one last November for a mini vacation to DC over Teachers convention. By the time we got home both Portable DVD players were garbage! Be careful what you buy at Walmart. We brought these at Walmart.com. The carrying cases were very flimsy and the DVD fronts kept opening while playing, disrupting the movie. The power source on one of the players snapped in half. My kids are older and very responsible (usually anyway... ). I can't remember the name of the brand....but it obviously wasn't a Sony.

My suggestion would be to purchase the DVD player ahead of time, use it for a few days and see what you think. Our local Walmart store took both players back, no questions asked. They even reimbursed our shipping charges. Good luck and have a great trip. (I'm really jealous!!)

Actually, I'd planned to take it out on a sort of test run before the trip anyway, just because I'm technologically challenged and want to be sure I can hook the thing up! *Knocks on wood* I tend to have great luck with the cheaper Walmart products and hope it continues, but will watch out for poor performance now - forewarned is forearmed!

I have that DVD player (the portable one right? Not the one that is made specifically for the car?) - Ours is made by Initial- and while it's No Sony - it was also a few hundred dollars less....We LOVE this DVD player- -- It has been on 4 trips to Disney- hauled around the parks in a backpack, on airplanes, etc.... I think I've had it since Nov. 2002. Not only is it wonderful for entertaining my now 4 y.o on airplane trips- we also take it with us (with headphones) to longer, more adult-oriented dinners where he might get bored (I no longer have to try to entertain him at Jiko, etc....He eats his dinner, then gets a movie afterwards (Disney of course)).

I have never had a problem with it --- in fact, I called the company and ordered a second battery for it (about $40) so we could use it on cross-country plane trips (The battery lasts 2 - 21/2 hrs.). I did, however, buy a nice, padded DVD case for it (by Case Logic) that fits it perfectly (as well as holding the extra battery, headphones, and DVDs) (about $15) (I found it on the internet--- took measurements of the DVD player and did a search) (Mine didn't come with a case). When it comes time to use it- I just pull it out of the case, attach the battery and it's ready to go.

Trust me- this thing has more than paid for itself in "Mommy sanity" !!!Jill

BlueKangaroo- is yours just a small TV w/DVD player, not the handheld type?
If so I just bought the same one :) came with carrying case also.

But mine doesnt have the car plug, it says it's included, was it just stuck in the box?
guess we'll have to do a 2 hour drive and take it back to exchange :(

It's actually pretty large - maybe 12" or more high? It comes with a case with straps that go over the front seats to hold it in place in the middle.

The one I bought was an open box one and the car plug was in the bottom, along with the wall plug.

Go get your plug! I was surprised it came with one actually, I know they can be a bit pricey.

okey doke, will get it :) I thought it should have been in the box :)

I feel like we got a good deal, because the bags are around $40 most of the TV/DVD's are around $189.00. So I am pleased :) Thanks for the info :)

Do you have problem seeing the screen during daytime? I have a DVD player on my laptop. I played movies in the car too. But I can only do that when it is dark outside. Are these portable DVD players better in that prospect?

Thanks,

Jane

I read up on all the brands before I bought...

I got a Panasonic 9 Inch portable at Circuit City for 624.99
I also got the 5 yr warranty on it...usually I dont go for warranty but with small electronics ya never know...Im hoping it breaks in 4 years and I get a new one.....

When you buy from a good store, if it breaks, you can change it out.

The Initials seemd to have alot of problems. Several people said that they got one, it burned up, overheated, quit playing movies. Took it back, got a second one, and it did the same thing. 3rd one worked just fine.

Audiovox, Memorex, Apex had some of the same issues too.

I almost bought a Gear 2 Gear or G2g at Sams club...
2 7inch monitors with headphones, carrying case the whole shebang for 500. I couldnt find any info out about them so I stayed away...

Regarding the watching in daylight hours, it works fantastic. No problems with mine.
