Does anyone know why Disney decided to make two seemingly separate resorts but call them by the same parent name instead of just calling them both something unique? It seems lazy but maybe someone knows why they did it.

Originally, Port Orleans referred only to what is now known as POFQ. POR was originally called Dixie Landings. Disney decided not to continue the "Dixie" name and renamed the resorts as they are now.

Edit: I was typing when Tinkerbella answered.

It may relate to the way they are managed- possibly under one General Manager, although I don't know for sure that that's the case. I do know that the pools are shared between the two "sides"- hopping is allowed.

The three All-Stars are managed that way- basically as one resort.

No,it was strictly "Political Correctness" that "forced" Disney to do away with the "DIXIE" Landings name.

The entire original "theme" for "Dixie Landings" was "downplayed" when the name was changed-for example Riverside Mill Food Court was originally "Colonel's Cotton Mill" Food Court.

I can see that. You would think that in 1992, when DL opened, TDO would have known that putting "Dixie" or "Cotton" on a Southern themed anything would be considered insensitive and tone deaf.

Yes,I imagine whoever named it that caught some serious "grief"!

I also often wonder how Splash Mountain has managed to "survive" intact.

Probably because there is no mention of Uncle Remus or any other thing related to the plantation life in Song of the South. Splash Mountain only tells the Tales of the Brief Patch.

I don't usually literally lol, but I did when I saw your computer-bashing smilie. :rotfl2:

Just remember, there is a HUGE, HUGE distinction between POR and POFQ -- you can only get Beignets at POFQ!!!!! But, you can walk over from POR and eat them on the way back while the sleepyheads are trying to think about waking up.

Not that I did that!!!!

The resorts themselves are themed to certain sections of the south and are supposed to complement each other. FQ has always been New Orleans and the "city" area, thus it is more compact. Riverside reflects the "mansions" areas outside the city, then the country areas beyond in the "bayous".

French Quarter use to have a TS restaurant, too. I thought they tried to merge them into one to save money. If that was the case, glad it didn't work.
