Port adventure time overlapping with getting back to boat time?

I booked an excursion through Disney, and it says the activity is from 2:00pm until 5:00pm, but it says onboard time for the ship is 4:45pm. How does this work?

If you are on a DCL-based excursion, you will be fine. They usually overestimate the times for the excursions a bit, but in the event that the group is delayed, they will hold the ship as long as possible or will take responsibility for getting the group to the ship.

In all likelihood the group will be the last on the ship and it will leave shortly after you return.

IF the times changed after excursion booking opened, then the excursion times might be adjusted from what is published. Final details will be on the tickets in your cabin on Day 1.

We were on a DCL excursion that was scheduled to return at least half an hour after the all-aboard. The passengers had to "tender" (ferry) from ship to shore, and lines can get long. Having our excursion return "late" gave the other passengers time to get back on board so the tender boats were available when we needed them, without waiting in line.

No worries. You’ll get back to the ship on time. You might be hurried on the ship by crew members when you get off the bus but they’ll wait for you. They’ll probably cut the excursion time so you return at the all-aboard time.

This is exactly why some of us only book tours thru Disney! If your tour is delayed for any reason, weather, traffic, emergency, etc. the ship will wait for you!! I have seen this happen, Aloha, Karen

In 2008 we were to leave on the Magic (EBPC) from Acapulco at 2 pm. Ten minutes after 2 I told my wife that something was amiss...they always left on time. Went up to the top deck and watched a few nervous DCL crew around one gangplank thumping their watches. 2:30 and nothing. Finally, at 2:45 a bus comes flying up to the inspection tent on the dock, out come the passengers running straight for the ship. Once on board, the plank goes up and the captain would have laid rubber if he could to get in the queue for the Panama Canal. Turns out it was a DCL excursion and bus had a flat. They will wait, within reason.

Just a heads up, the ship won't always wait, I have seen numerous reports where the ship had to leave. Yes, Disney had to get them back to the ship the next opportunity, but they were still responsible for food and I think lodging as well. If it were me, I wouldn't do an excursion that is scheduled to get back any later than 2 hours before the all aboard time, even through Disney.

Yah, see this thread for a case where tides meant the ship had to depart on schedule:
... The next port was Liverpool and Disney Magic had to leave Dublin without the people on the excursion. This was due to tides and sailing conditions. The Irish sea is a not a deep water piece of water and the Magic had to leave port at a certain time.
