OK, everyone who has stayed at Port Orleans Riverside....tell me what you think. Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly on this resort.

We'll be there the first week of October!

Thanks-

I gave my review last week here

http://disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=204754

Just my own opinion..and several had plenty of their own, in this review, and privately.

We did like the resort, it just wasn't what I thought from reading here. We had ressies for PO-FQ for August, but based on what some wrote me, I was afraid it woudn't have enough shade, so we will be going back to Riverside again and will visit FQ. We are only staying at a moderate at all, because we got a postcard and got the resort for $84, which at this time, is just $10 diff from All Stars. If we had our grands with us, we would go back to AS, since that is their preference.

Stayed in Dixie Landings-Alligator Bayou in Nov. '99. Then in PO-R in Magnolia Terrace in Nov. '01. It will always be Dixie to me. Anyway...I liked the theming in AB. Very peaceful. We were kinda far out from the food court, main pool. But, the walk was very pleasant, about 6 minutes. The rooms were rustic in theme. Hickory limbs for bed posts, patchwork quilts on the beds. Our stay in Magnolia Terrace was quite nice. The 'mansions' are much more formal in theme. Cherry type furnishings, more brocade type cloths. Formal gardens. We were about 3 minute walk from pool and food court.
The food court was good. If you use it at peak eating times it can be very crowded. We usually ate at off-peak times so wasn't a problem for us. The choices of food was good also. My 8 yr. old dd is what we refer to as having a 'discriminating palate'. (picky). She never had a problem finding something to eat. And neither did her parents. Is it gormet quality?? No, but it isn't too bad either. We love the main pool. Have heard that it is undergoing some rehab. Would most likely be fine this fall and probably much sooner. We loved the boat to DD. Very leisurely. Can get a little chilly in the fall. THe quiet pools are just that...quiet. We never say very many people in them on either trip. Laundry facilities are not bad. Felt very safe while using them. All in all, we love the resort. Would recommend it to anyone. We will be trying out maybe All Star Sports and the Poly next time.

Thanks for the replies. I decided this time to go with a "moderate" resort because we have stayed at the All-Stars for the last two trips. The first time was fine, but the second trip just felt like we were trapped in a zoo. It was just a madhouse.

Looking forward to a more relaxing trip this time around.

The first time was fine, but the second trip just felt like we were trapped in a zoo.

I'm sure the time of year matters..it was very crowded last week at POR. Pool, foodcourt, sidewalks, had lots of people. If we go to AS in the warmer months, it too is crowded. Last January, you could see from one end of the AS Sports to the other (til the last night when the cheerleaders came).

We spent a week in April and my famliy of 4 loved it. It is so well landscaped and peaceful. We enjoyed the quiet pool next to our room at the Magnolia section. The main pool was fun but was very busy. The food court was fine. We stayed at AKL and food court was about the same. The downtown disney boat is awesome. What a nice ride at sunset and then back after dark with bags of stuff. After a crazy day at the park we found it so much more peaceful than other resorts. My two cents.

The resort was so great! I stayed their in 1998 and loved it. The boat to DTD was so fun to go on. I liked it better than the bus, and it was a great, relaxing trip.

The food court is out of this world. I only had one bad thing their, ever. That was some pizza that was a bit old, but other than that, I have had great luck with their food court.

The pools, both quiet and the big one were amazing. The quiet pool was just the right size, and Ol' Man Island was one of the nicest pools i have been in.

She could write a book on PO-R, just this morning she called me to say she booked it again for next year--which will be their fifth year in a row! Hopefully she is reading this and will respond-- she's never had a bad thing to say about this resort.

Disnee Dad Says...............................We love Dixie Landings, stayed there October 1997, and November 1999. Except for the food court area it was most tranquil. Get back from the parks say around nine, go to the food court that was pretty empty by then to get sodas and back to the rooms. On the trip to the rooms we would usually see between 5 and 10 people on the paths to the room, and it was like a 1/4 mile walk! We never saw the quiet pools crowded at anytime ever, only the main one.
Stay at a mansion, most regal and sophisticated, and spread out. By the way, it will always be Dixie Landings, Port Orleans- Riverside sounds like a retirement home!! "Look grandpa you get to stay at Port Orleans-Riverside, and we can visit every year!!"

Just my two cents. We have stayed at both. We prefer French Quarters. It is not as spread out, not as far from the food court, bus stop or swimming pool. Our eleven year old likes the pool here better also. Don't get me wrong, POR was very nice, just to spread out. ( Anyone no why it's not named Dixie Landings any more?) Anyway, I'm sure you will be pleased with either. Have fun.

I have stayed at Dixie/POR more than 6 times since 1998. We started at ASMu (3 times) and loved it...until we stayed at POR. Never went back. Since then we have branched out to stay at Coronado, AKL and WLV which were all great. I'll be at POFQ in a week and have been past it and walked through it many times. Overall, with the exception of the WLV which are just fantastic, we keep coming back to POR.

AB vs Mansion: This is a personal preference issue. I have stayed in both, but we prefer AB. We like the trundle bed option. We also like the more intimate feel of the smaller bayou buildings. We have stayed in Bayou buildings 14, 15 and 16 - not a bad location in the bunch. The noise of the quiet pool depends on how many people choose to be there at the same time. Sometimes they're packed and sometimes they're not (in my experience with the All Stars, the pools were always packed except in February). Having said this however, the mansions are truly beautiful - reminiscent of the Old South - with beautiful gardens.

Food: Boatwrights is an excellent sit down restaurant. We have only had dinner, but were very happy with the menu selection. They have a breakfast buffet. The food court is pretty typical American/Southern food. There is a bakery/dessert section - yummy! There is a southern/American food section with taco salad, Caesar salad, and special entrees. There is a grill section for burgers, sandwiches and chicken. There is an Italian section for spaghetti, calzone and pizza. The pizza is wonderful! There are many breakfast choices and the staff is very accomodating. If you just want scrambled eggs, that's fine. There are self service bins with bread, bagels, cookies, salads, milk, etc. And, don't forget the refillable mugs which are good forever (we always take ours with us!). We always sit in the back area by the waterwheel - very peaceful. At certain times the food court is very busy, however, with the decreased crowds over the past couple of years, it is not as crowded as it used to be.

Rooms: Larger than the All Stars with 2 doubles, 2 sinks, small, but adequate bathroom, trundle bed in the Bayou, table and 2 chairs, plus TV stand with drawers. There is also a hanging clothes section with a shelf. Plenty of room for my family of 4 as long as the kids are neat. :D

Activities: 6 pools - the main pool and 5 quiet pools. If 1 is closed, there's another close by. Playground. Very good game room according to my teens. Rental boats. Rental bikes. Fishin' hole where you can feed the fish (they're so smart they've learned to take the worm off the hook without getting hooked :D ), nice paths for long walks (take the walk to French Quarter along the river ;) ). Friendly ducks who love to be fed (they love bread  ). Tame bunnies who might come right up to you to take the bread out of your hand! For the most part, friendly CM's. There's always the potential for a "bad apple", but in my experience over the past 5 years of staying on-site, there are some "bad apples" in each resort and each park).

Store: Fulton's General Store. An absolutely huge store - at least twice as big as ASMu's store. I always find plenty of souvenirs, snacks, etc. to buy. :-)

Boat to Downtown Disney: How wonderful this is back! There's nothing better than a leisurely ride to Downtown Disney. It can be a little cold in the winter months :p , but it's lovely in the warmer weather. Boats were running 4:30 PM-11:45 PM when I visited in April.

Bus transportation: Has improved immensely. Back in 1998 and 1999 when Disney was always packed, the buses were packed as well and often slow. Disney has definitely put a lot of attention into the buses and it shows. There are 4 bus stops. I usually recommend catching the bus from the first stop (main building) in the early mornings. The bus stops at POFQ first and sometimes is full after picking up at the main POR stop. And...all buses are packed when the parks let out each night, regardless of the resort and how much you've personally paid.

Note my signature: This summer we were originally going to split our stay between POR, AKL and WLV. After much discussion, we decided to stay all 8 days at POR. First, of all we couldn't pass up the $84 rate (a $50 savings per night and a bargain over the AS's, especially considering all of the amenities that a moderate has). Second, we just love POR - especially in the summer.

Have a wonderful trip!

We love the whole Port Orleans resort area. POFQ is our favorite, probably for sentimental reasons, but both the resorts are beautiful.

We've stayed several times (most recently in Feb of this year), in mansions and Bayou, and Bayou is by far our favorite of the two; the buildings are smaller, the rooms have a trundle bed which our DS just loves, and the meandering paths just make the place seem like a different world!

The boat to downtown Disney is a great feature; Relaxing and romantic at the end of the day. The main pool area is wonderful, and you can also use the colorful "dragon" slide pool at the POFQ which is DS's favorite.

The CMs at both resort have consistently gone above and beyond the call for us. The bus transportation has been exceptional. Ireally can't think of anything negative to say about the place; I feel that even without any discounts, the resort is a great value, and if you can get a discount, better still.

Good luck making your decision, and have a great trip!

We loved Dixie Landings. Stayed their in 1997. Pretty landscaping. Loved the bridge. The rooms were great. My favorite foodcourt in WDW. About the name change  Dixie Landings sounds like a fun place. Port Orleans Riverside sounds stuffy. Who is in charge of all this name changing anyway? I still haven't forgiven them for changing the names of all the longhouses at the Poly.

And as for POR, it will always be Dixie Landings to me :p
