I have stayed at both. They both have a lot to offer. The theming at AoA may be over the top for some but is tremendously fun IMO. Walking around the resort taking photos with all the larger than life character statues makes you feel like you are at an attraction. I prefer the transportation at AoA because there is a singular bus stop and the lines make it feel more orderly and less like a free for all. I didn't think AoA felt loud or chaotic and I never had a problem getting a table at the food court, even during peak dining hours in June. However, POR offers a slightly larger room with queen beds that are significantly more comfortable. POR is a prettier resort while AoA is cartoon-y. The standard rooms at AoA are the farthest from the main building (although I didn't think the walk was that bad). If you choose to stay in a suite, you will have considerably more space but the cost will be MORE than a moderate and would be more comparable to one of the cheaper deluxes like WL or AKL. I don't think the space is worth paying for with two adults and an 8 year old. Both resorts are great in their own way and I think both are worth trying once!
