Popularity of your kids name..

Julia was #33 in her birth year, down to #40 in 2008.
Katherine was #35 in her birth year, down to #45 in 2008.

Out of curiosity I checked my own...Shannon was #22 in my birth year, which is funny because I've met very few other Shannon's along the way, and the only other Shannon I ever had in my class growing up was a boy (surprisingly, it was #100 for boys in my birth year)!

In 2008 it was down to #482!

Cassidy in 1992 was 991 and peaked at 107 in 2000 and is now at 228...which makes sense because most of the Cassidy's we've met have been littler. Though there was another Cassidy born in the same hospital on the same day...though he was a boy.

Abi is actually Abigail so it was the 32nd most popular girls name in 1996...it's back up to the 8th spot. Funny thing is...we don't meet hardly any Abigail's in any recreation!

My name peaked at 96 in 1986 however I use the traditional, though non-American, spelling. If you look at the more common American spelling it has been hovering in the 40's for the last 35 years, peaking last year at 32.

My kids:
-DS was 22 the year he was born and has now dropped to 45. His name peaked in the late 80's and has been on the downslide ever since.
-DD was 173 the year she was born and the highest it has been in 20 years is 97. The name she is commonly called was 181 the year she was born. It is a Jennifer/Jenny type thing so I'm sure many of the 173 are called the nickname.

My two older kids were #82 and #55 respectively... their names are known and have traditional spellings but we rarely run into anyone with their names.

Ironically the youngest whose name was the furthest down the charts at #126 the year we named him and #123 last year, is the one whose name we hear ALL THE TIME. We constantly meet other kids with the same name... at school, church, rec classes... everywhere. His name is Micah.

When my daughter, Nicole was born, her name was at #37. As of 2008, it dropped to 106 - that's a huge jump.

Samantha was number 10 when she was born and number 11 as of 2008.

Alyson and Brenden have both been in the top 450 for the past 14 yrs. Garren has never made the top anything.

DD is Cailyn -- not in top 1000 from 2001 (year of her birth) - 2005, then it's:

872nd - 2006
974th - 2007
738th - 2008

My name was pretty popular when I was born (43rd in 1978), but in 2000 it was only 905th and not even in the top 1000 for any years after that.

My son's name is Malachi. It was #252 in 2001 when he was born, and now it's up to #162.

Katherine- #33 in 1998. It seems to hover in the 30s-40s most years.

They have Catherine at 85 the year she was born. I have rarely met another child her age spelled the same way (and I thought I was spelling it the 'traditional' way). Oh well.

My Catherine is spelled the same way. I have many adult friends that go by Cathy but their full name is Catherine, but I have yet to meet another child Catherine who goes by Catherine spelled with a C.

Jacob... was #4 the year he was born, 1995, has been #1 since 1999.

Nathan... was #34 the year he was born, 1997, is in the low 20s now.

Matthew... was #3 the year he was born, 2000, is now 10.

We'd had Jacob's name chosen for 10 years prior to his birth, so we didn't care that it was so popular. Matthew...we were still deciding on his name in the hospital and had NO CLUE it was so popular. Although, he's never had another Matthew in his class!

Christopher was 6th for the year he was born.

It was weird - I never looked at the list before we picked a name. I didn't know any kids named Christopher. Now there seem to be tons of them.

jen

Nicholas - ranked #6 the year he was born and 29th in 2008
Michael - ranked #2 the year he was born and 2nd in 2008
I'm not very original, am I?

Logan was #51 when he was born in 95.

Delaney was #258 when she was born in 97.

Jennifer was #10 back in 1967, but we reach #1 in 1970 and stayed there thru 1984. Thats a whole lotta Jennifers.

Anthony was #20 back in 1969.

Margaret - was 102 the year she was born (180 last year), Eric - was 26 (86 last year), and youngest D Hannah was 7 (17 last year). It hasn't been a problem her having such a popular name, it must have been more common elsewhere in the country, because we haven't run into too many Hannahs around here. Son has more Erics in his classes.

Wyatt was 131 the year he was born (1999). It was up to 62 in 2008.

With the new baby, everytime we come up with a name, we look to see where it ranks on the list. If it is too high up, we don't use it!
