Pope given last Rites

Pope John Paul II has been given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church as his health deteriorates, a Vatican source tells CNN.

CNN is all over this bigtime... 84 years old and in the health he is in, I'm not sure if the Holy Father is going to make it this time...

I'm not Catholic but I have great respect for him.

I, too, hope he is not in any pain. :(

I wish him a calm passing, with a minimum of pain. :(

I hope that when he does pass, it will be peaceful. God bless.

I wonder if being out in public, struggling to speak, and not being able to just took the last of the fight out of him.

An incredibly brilliant man ... a visionary ... I may not agree with him on some major points, but he will leave the world a better place than he found it. Something interesting: when he passes, this will be my first papal conclave. I'm a Catholic, about to be 25, and this was the pope of my birth. Both Paul IV and JPI died in 1978.

I think the next pope will be an extremely conservative Italian.
It's a little bit frightening to me.

I hope and pray that his passing is peaceful.

I no longer practice the Catholic faith, but I have the utmost respect for Pope John Paul and this makes me very sad :sad1:. God Bless him and I hope he is not in any pain.

Indeed, a very sad day all the way around. :sad2:

I see the hand of God in this.

This has taken the news of Terri's death right off the TV.

This man has devoted his life to God and he is going to the place that I'm sure gives him joy to go to.

I would think God has loving, open arms to him. May he pass in a peaceful way.

That's very sad. The man has led an extraordinary life, I hope he's not in pain.

CNN says high fever, UTI, the preexisting knee and hip injuries, the Parkinsons ... but if he's still alert, I feel sure that none of that is hurting him nearly as much as the psychological pain of being unable to communicate. He is, more so than any other pope of modern times, the great communicator.

CNN (headlines)
VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church late Thursday night as his health deteriorated, a Vatican source has told CNN.

CNN (report)
The sacrament does not necessarily mean that the pope is dying. Last rites -- also known as the sacrament of anointing the sick -- are commonly given to people who are seriously ill as well.

I think he is just in declining health I dont think he is near death. I do hope that when his time does come he goes peacefully and does not suffer. He Was a powerful man in his day though and will be missed.

Steve

If he were just given the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, it would have most likey been presented that way. I guess in all my years as a Catholic, Last Rights have never been presented as Annointing of the Sick. I didn't think they were the same thing. I am not 100% sure, but I think CNN has that wrong, but don't quote me. I have a meeting at church in an hour and I am for sure going to get this clarified. Bless him, though.
