Cheshireval: I was nervous at first to go in December but I really think it will be great. Anytime at WDW is great
What is the typical weather at that time? I was thinking that I would bring shorts and a couple pairs of pants/sweats for the night time. Do I need mittens for the night time shows? Are you able to swim at that time of year? The pools are heated so I figured at least the kids would want to go swimming.
Definitely bring a variety of clothing, but emphasis on the lighter fabrics! It will likely be 'mild' in December - but even if it's *cold* during your stay, being from the north you won't get as chilly as us southerners! Moving south from Minnesota years ago, I speak from experience!
We swam in the pools during our December trip 3 years ago. The air temp was cool in the evenings (60s), but the water was warm. Just be sure to have a towel waiting to wrap up in when you get out.
I'm there almost every year right around Christmas. There have been some years where I've been very comfortable in tee-shirts and jeans. Other years the temp huddled right around freezing, with ice cold rain and wind.
I've never been comfortable enough to wear shorts or even think about swimming. Then again, I'm from the South so I'm not real tough in cold weather.
I would definitely plan on wearing layers. Even if it's warmish in the afternoons, it can still get pretty chilly in the mornings and evenings. And bring some very warm clothes, just in case!
