I've been doing searches and can't find the exact information that I need. Maybe someone can help me...

This will be the first time I'm traveling with my mom and two kids. I made reservations for the POP this fall (hurray!). My mom, who was a nurse for 20+ years, has worn all the "fat pads" off the bottoms of her feet and has hammertoes, etc. She also had knee surgery. The knee is usually OK, bit if she sleeps wrong, it can go out of socket and she can barely walk. So I'm taking a wheelchair. (just so you know, there's some other health issues with her (vision) and my daughter (mobility, fatigue and sensory issues) that I'm trying to accommodate as well)

So when I called and described our situation to the CM, she said she thought we should definitely have a walk in shower and requested that for us. She didn't want to risk my mom having an accident in the tub.

So here are my questions:
  • What does this mean room wise? Are there three types of handicap bathrooms or two (AKA- is walk in and roll in the same thing?) Are there Dbl/Dbl rooms with the walk in shower? If not, how will this be accommodated? With trundles or something?
  • She sleeps on a recliner rather than a bed, so I'd like to look into renting one for her. Has anyone done this and with what company? The CM referred me to Apria. Has anyone worked with them? Will it even fit in the room?
Any other thoughts that might help are definitely welcome. If you don't want to post your response here, feel free to PM me.

Thanks so much for your input and advice.

A recliner would only fit in a room at Pop if you removed the table and chairs. If you're going to rent one, you might want to call ahead to have housekeeping remove them so you're not struggling to get around in the room.---Kathy

I am not sure whether there are any dbl-dbl rooms with a walk-in shower at the value resorts. That would be something to double check.

When I went to WDW before I needed a roll-in shower, I just requested a shower-chair and they brought one up. If your mom and daughter are used to a regular tub, a shower chair may work just fine. A roll-in shower means that the "bedroom" of the hotel room is smaller to make room for the bigger bathroom. This may be an issue if you also need to rent a recliner.

Someone with more experience at the value resorts may be able to help me out here.

Do you think I'd be better asking through the main reservations number or calling POP directly? Or is there a number to call special needs directly? My current requests were done by the CM at 407 W DISNEY. She was very helpful. She did put me on hold to ask if they were able to provide a recliner. I was surprised because I never thought they would, which they don't, but there's a lot of stuff they apparently do so it was nice of her to check... :) The shower-chair idea might be the way to go. I think that's what she uses at her home. I'll ask my mom what she thinks would be better for her. If she goes that way, would we need a dbl/dbl handicap room to get the support handles and hand-held shower head, or do all rooms have these?

Anyone have recommendations for a good medical supplier for the recliner?

I know, at All-Stars, unless they redid some, ALL of the accessible rooms are Kings.

I "think" at Pop, the accessible rooms that are DBL-DBL have tubs with grab bars, and the ones with walk-in showers are Kings.

In the FAQ for this board, there is a direct phone number for special services. PLEASE call this number directly. Central Reservations used to transfer guests to that number so that we could talk to them directly, but now they tend to put you on hold while they talk to them. Many things have gotten lost in translation since they started doing that. So if you have specific needs for your room, then since you already have your room reservation, find the number and call Special Needs directly.

Bump...

Has anyone rented a recliner for they're room? Any thoughts, recommendations, etc....
