We are planning our first family Disney vacation ever in Oct. DH, DS11, & DD6 is so excited. 10/ 4 - 10/ 12 and we have free ining :cool1:
Originally we booked a preferred room at POP. Somewhere on the DIS I read that it really doesn't matter if you have standard or preferred. Then I have had folks tell me it really does matter. Can someone please let me know if there is a really big difference?
We are debating changing to a standard because for a small amount of money more we can stay 2 more days. Would the location really make or break our vacation? Of course my kids are voting for the extra days. I think I am leaning that way too but DH is not sure. Thanks for any advice. :flower:

I haven't stayed a Pop yet, just booked my first stay there a few days ago. I just got a standard room. If booking standard gives you 2 extra days at WDW, I say go for it! I'm not one who gets overly obsessed with room location though. I read a bit about the different buildings here on the resorts board and called CRO back to add my requests. My room location won't make or break my vacation...it's a long weekend off for my kiddos and we'll be in the parks the majority of the time anyway.

Here is a map of Pop Century's buildings.

My main issue with Preferred is that there is no closeby parking. We've stay at Pop about 6 times. The only time we stayed Preferred was the first time for the Grand Opening. I like 50's and 70's. Some rooms in the 70's building are actually closer than some of the Preferred (60's) rooms. We stayed one night last year the day before checking into Poly GVC. We had a room on the frist floor (50'sA) facing the 50's pool. We loved it. While DD11 swam, I did some laundry. Its all right there. Considering you are going for 8 days plus I think 50's is a great location. Its probably a 3 minute walk more than the Preferred but I think its worth the extra days.

Prefered is overrated at PC. It's nicer at some of the All-Stars (specificly music) because of the closer proximity to the main hall, but at Pop the 50's and the 70's are just as close (and in some cases closer) than the many of the rooms in the "preferred" buildings in the 60's (remember, even those rooms way in the back of the 60's are "preferred"

50's A building is as close as you'll get - you could literally toss something and land on the roof of classic hall.

I wanted Pop standard view for our October visit, but it was not available. I decided to stay at ASM rather than pay the extra. I'd rather be at Pop, I think.

I've already stayed 2 times at POP and  it!!!!! We stayed in the 50s section, Building 2, 4th Floor. It was about a 3-5 min. walk to the food court, 1-3 min. walk to the parking lot, and a 1-2 min. walk to the Bowling Pin pool. Just outside of our room, we could see Illuminations and Wishes in Epcot and the Magic Kingdom. They played together almost every night we were there. The pool was very quiet when we went in Jan. 05. It was usually heated to 82-86 degrees. In my opinion, I would change your reservation from preferred to standard and stay the extra 2 nights!!!! I hope this helps you out!

We stayed in the 80's section overlooking the computer pool and it was only a couple of minutes walk to the food court. We also walked by the parking lot to get to the buses--again a couple of minutes. We didn't find it to be a problem at all. :flower:

Thanks so much guys for the great advice. We have made our mind up...definately staying 2 more days!!!

I don't know who is more excited the adults or the kids. :cool1:

We also will be at POP oct 04-13 for the first time. It is a :bday: trip to celebrate our DD 13th b-day. We will be staying in the standard rooms, I figure even if it ends up being a little bit further to walk we are gonna need the exercise to burn off all the eating we will be doing on the free dining plan!!
