Although we'll probably trade up to a moderate when the Jan. codes come out, I've booked Pop Century just to have a place to hang my hat on New Year's Day when our trip begins and we're assigned to Classic Years. Can someone explain the theming here or point me to a site with pics in case this is where we end up staying?

Thanks,
Bill From PA

the theming varies by section... 50's is 1950's themed w/lady/tramp/juke box icons... bowling pin shaped pool and stairways... 50's music playing in the common areas, very well done... 60's has the "hippy dippy" flower shaped pool w/1960's icons... etc up to '90s and its cell phones...

there is a great FAQ thread on pop century on this board which will answer all your questions and then some... if you go to the last ten or twelve pages or so, there are lots of links w/pictures, floor plans, layouts, etc...

we stayed there in aug/sept and were overwhelmingly impressed... the fact that the resort is less than a year old is a huge plus, but the theming was fun, the main common area was nice, great displays in the lobby, excellent food court and a great big gift shop... excellent bus service as well (only value that does not share a bus!)

try it, you'll like it! (70's! LOL!) we've stayed at cbr before and liked pop ALOT more!

We stayed at Pop two weeks ago. It's a lot of "fun" we liked it much better the CBR as well. The food court was clean and had a lot of options. It looked very clean (a biggie for me) being new probably helps in that area. The only thing are the double beds! DD is only 8 but is all over the bed so sharing with her is not an option. DH and I need more room and we are not large people.

I really misunderstood the whole Pop Century thing. I thought 'Classic Years' was a section in PC like Music, Sports & Movies are sections of AllStars. We've stayed at ASMu twice. So my ressie confirmation offers no clue as to which 'Decade' we're getting, we won't find out until we get there?

No, you won't find out which decade you're in until you get there, unless you booked the preferred room, which is the 60's. You can request a decade though if you'd like, but not guaranteed. The 60s has a big Playdoh icon and a big Jungle Book figure. The 70s has a giant foosball court and giant Mickey telephone. The 80s has a giant Sony Walkman and a computer monitor-shaped pool with squishy keyboard the kids can jump on, and the 90s has a giant laptop icon with cell phone stairways.

We stayed there last Dec for one night before switching to our DVC villa...I requested the 70's building and got it...I thought the themeing was very nice...

the classic years is a "section" like music or sports (and then they are broken down further like football or basketball) but the other "resort" of pop century, the legendary years, has not been completed... that's why there is pop century-classic but no other resort (legendary) to complement it... does that make sense?

you can request a decade before you go, but it will depend on availability (just like requesting a certain building at the poly, or section at cbr, etc) although for an extra ten bucks a night, you can be guaranteed the '60s section (which is preferred, but personally, i don't think it's worth it as pop is a very compact resort w/very few undesirable locations)

ENJOY!

I stayed there in Feb - we had 50's , building 2, 4th fl. Nice and quiet and view of Illuminations and WISHES (distant, but nice).

Just booked a room there for mousefest and requested 50's again.

Also, 50's is not a long walk from anywhere.

If you take your chances you could get a crummy view. I met a couple right after they saw their room and they were headed to ask for another. They had a 1st fl facing some bushes - for 10 days. They were so disappointed. Hope they were able to change - we were told the resort was full when we checked in. I always put in a request and they are great about trying to honor it.

Pop Century theming is pop culture from the past century.

Phase I is the Classic Years -- the 1950's through 1990's.
Phase II (not yet complete) is the Legendary Years -- the 1900's through the 1940's.

Each decade is themed to various pop culture of the era. For example, the 1970's have a disco dance floor with disco lights, a twister board, big wheels, and 8-tracks.

BaciBecky, that sounds like a great room, do you have the room number? I am on the phone now requesting just what you just said, that view sounds great, but the room # would be even better! Thanks so much

We usually stay on the first floor but that view sounds great!

If you want to be close to the lobby I would request 4112 through 4101. They are the closest to the lobby you could possibly get. Pool side too.

DD and I were there last week and had room 0263 in the 70's building with the Big Wheel and it was literally just a few steps to the food court. I was sure it was a preferred room but I now know that it wasn't. I would definitely stay there again.

I would like to see the fireworks like she said, I just called to request a room on that side of the building hopefully we get it!:bounce:

It should be noted that these rooms are Smoking Optional rooms, and are very susceptible to pool noise.

Well, i hate to disagree, but my friends who have stayed at POP hated it. They said it was like a tenament, and they won't be returning.

Sorry your friends did not like POP..maybe if they had learned more before they booked it they would have stayed elsewhere?

It's true, POP is not for everyone, but I am a resort snob, have spent many vacations at the deluxe resorts, but am staying at POP a 2nd time.

I do think it's wise to look at photos of the resort and learn as much as possible before choosing to stay there. Also request an area that you might like - view etc - but try to be happy with whatever location - Always something positive to be found!!

Sometimes too, I think folks read the reports on the POP thread written by those who love the resort and expectations may be higher than reality. It is a value resort, plastic cups in the rooms (I hate those cups!!) and some areas will be very noisy during busy times.

Glad there are so many resorts from which to choose! :)

Tyler, I hope you can explain the numbering to me.

On the map it lists the 50s, 60s and 70s bldgs as A, B, and/or C.
But posters here refer to it as 1, 2, 3, etc.

Which ones go together?? Is 50s Bldg A the same as 50s Bldg 1?

Thanks!
