Pop Century - Can this be true?

The grab bar on the back wall of the tub is of no use for getting in and out of the tub unless you are tall. Makes the tub inaccessible for me unless I have a companion to get me in and out safely. I can't call the so called HA tubs at Pop acessible if I need another person the assist me getting in and out.

I mean I agree, but they call them that. The bar is also on the side wall, too, not just the back.

We had a hard time at CR and AKL, because mom is at the point where a tubuseat doesn't work well (she needs to walk in), but someone messed up our ressie and that is what we were stuck with. NOT this time, I am gonna call again and again until I get what she needs for her comfort level.

Suzanne,
The tubs at the Pop are not on the side walls, only one on the back. I had a big problem with this 2 years ago because I was there without a companion and would not be able to use the tub at all in their so called accessible room. It had everything I needed for my hearing impairment but the tub was not accessible. So the moved me to a room that was fully accessible for my physical problems but did not have the equipment for the hearing impairment. They finally had to send to another resort to get a kit for hearing accesibility. Pop didn't have them because they had made specific rooms accessible for the deaf but didn't think that there were deaf people with other disabilities as well. Pop is the only resort I've found like this. I am sure the next section will be more accessible than the first as now they have seen the problems.

I am right with you on that... it would be of no assistance to me either. I am sorry it was so difficult to get the accomodations that you needed (all of them), I am glad it was finally worked out.

I still have not heard back from Disney and will post when I do!

PS: Happy Mother's Day to the wonderful "Disboard Moms" that have posted on this question or even simply read it! :flower3:

Wow ~ I took awhile to get back to this post! :rotfl:

Thanks to all of you that gave your input and pointers to me in regards to this!

I did talk to someone else in the "special needs" (or whatever the term is) department and she thought it best I book a fully HA room (she actually called me, in response to the inquiry (letter) I had written asking about the room types available).

As you know, I was against this, as I am not in a wheelchair, nor do I use an EVC full-time... I walk short distances using my cane. I did not want to take a room away from a guest that needed it, but I also know I could not get safely in/out of the tub unless it was surrounded by secure grab bars, so reluctantly I agreed to reserve a fully accessible room.

As some time has passed, and as my challenges seem to increase frequently, I am glad I did agree to this option... it will help ensure a safe vacation! :goodvibes

Has anyone ever stayed in a fully HA Pop Century (King) preferred room that is connecting? If so, are these generally closer to the "common areas" of PC, and are these first floor or at least close to the elevators? Is there a bench in the roll-in shower area or do you have to request one? Is the floor "treated" so as to not be slippery? Should I bring a rubber bath mat to stand on (due to the potential "slippery when wet or soapy" factor)?

Again, a big THANK YOU to all of you that gave your input and experiences... I really did/do appreciate you! :flower3:

We jsut stayed in a room just like this in June. Mom had the HA room with the roll-in shower, it has a seat that pulls down from the wall. I use her shower as well and didn't notice that it was slippery and that is a problem that I have at home, I slip in tubs. If you are afraid of falling, go ahead and bring the bath mat as a precaution. Beware that water will run out into the floor of the bathroom. We had to throw extra towels out to mop up the mess.

We were in Roger Rabbit building (right next to Roger), ground floor, you might want to request that, we did. It wasn't that close to anything, but the computer pool, but with the ECV, it wasn't a big deal to us. We were in the last 2 rooms near the center of the building, I believe they were 8172 and 8173 if I am not mistaken.

Please let me know if I can help futher, I might have missed something.

They're in five of the ten buildings - not necessarily "near everything" but DEFINITELY near the elevators.

Depending on how the drain is configured, the water may drain out well or may flow all over the floor. Ask for extra towels or extra bathmats. They don't dry as easily, but will contain the water better.
On our trip last October, we finally figured out how to keep the water from splashing all over. The shower curtains at OKW have an inner short curtain of vinyl and a long outer curtain of nylon. This will only work if the shower curtain is long and is made of nylon, but I'll share it anyway.
We were at OKW we noticed the shower curtain was kind of gathered up in a rosette, like this.....

Obviously, we couldn't use it like that, but when we took the rosette out, the shower curtain dragged on the floor by a good 6-10 inches. The first time I took a shower, I arranged the curtain so that the bottom edge was on the floor toward the inside of the shower. It got all wet and I figured the floor outside would be wet too, but it wasn't. THe shower curtain had contained the water and by having the bottom of the curtain toward the inside, water came back inside instead of going out. We had 2 bath mats in front of the shower, but they didn't actually get wet.
After we all showered, we were left with a wet shower curtain, but there was a wheelchair height retractable clothesline in the shower. We stretched it across and draped the wet shower curtain on it like this picture showed. Because it was nylon, it dried in a few hours.

PS - both pictures show a pull down shower seat. It's different in each picture because the pictures were from 2 different stays. The white seat in the 2nd picture was in an older room. The other seat was in a newer building and was a nicer seat.

Sue,

Thank you for the info about the shower curtain. I don't remember if the one at Pop was that long. We did have to layer towels though, and mousekeeping was good about leaving a huge stack for us each day. We tried several different things, mostly moving the showerhead to different positions, but the floor still got wet.

We really liked the seat at Pop, because it was huge, even bigger than the ones in your pictures, it was actually the width of the shower.

I don't remember having this problem (wet floor) at WL, but the shower was configured differently than Pop.

The fully accessible HA rooms at Pop are spread throughout the resort and are located on all floors, not just the first floor since there are elevators. Some are very far away from the main bldg and none face the lake. I actually prefer to be farther out. Once we were placed right across from the bowling pin pool in the 50's bldg which is quite close to the main bldg- not only was the brick surface of the walkway unbearable to traverse in my w'c ( meaning I had to go around the back of the bldg to get to the room) but we heard noise very late at night from those playing in the pool- I'm talking past midnight. Since then I request a room away from the main bldg and away from the pools. Sleep is more important to me than being close in although you can get a noisy neighbor anywhere.---Kathy

Wow ~ THANK YOU ALL very much, I appreciate your replies and pointers! :goodvibes I am actually asking for a room away from the pool (I know it is only a request, not guaranteed, but it does not hurt to try)! I also truly appreciate the input about the showers/towels! I am actually going to print this "condensed/compacted version" of your pointers and put it in my planning packet! Have a wonderful day! :flower3: Kimberly

Kimberly- I see we will just miss each other. My family will be at Pop from Aug 31-Sept. 14. Who knows....maybe you'll get the rooms we'll be vacating! Hope you have a wonderful vacation. We are counting down the days til ours.---Kathy

Oh, we truly are just missing each other! :sad2: We will be there towards evening... I am guessing by 5:00ish!

I would have loved to have met you in person (I really enjoy reading your posts on here and appreciate your input)! :goodvibes

I wonder if we will get your room... I will PM our room number when we get back out of curiousity!

We hope your vacation is wonderful as well! :cool1: We are counting down as well. I have a lot of items already packed and lists made for what is missing. The closer we get, the slower the days seem to go! Have fun Kathy!

Today I called to speak with the "special needs" reservation and had a very nice CM.

He was unable to assist with my needs at Pop Century. I was requesting a restroom with grab bars and hopefully a raised toilet. He stated that PC only has those in the rooms with "roll-in" showers. :confused3

I need the safety and security of the grab bars to safely get in and out of the shower.

TIA for your input, I appreciate it! :flower3:

There are portable suction-assist grab bars (12" in length) available for around $15.00. I am looking at a mail-order entry in a Whatever Works catalog as I type this. Get a couple of those and use them wherever you want...just don't leave them behind... :cheer2:

Does anyone know how well do these actually work? I was looking at some in a medical supply store, and when I grabbed the bar I was able to slide it off the laminated counter, no matter how tightly DH or I managed to stick it on. I was looking for my Mom, who could use the extra support, but was afraid that she would end up hurting herself if it slid when she tried to use it.

Thanks for any advice,
Amie

Mine works great. I center each suction cup on a tile and make sure they both have been softened in hot water so they have maximum grip. My bar doesn't slip...and I only use it for balance, not gymnastics...:rotfl:

I know some people like them, but I would not feel secure using something that sticks with suction cups. Maybe for a little steadying for someone who might be a little shaky, but not if the person really needs to put any weight/stress on it.

Yes Sue, I agree. I am to scared to use such a device, as I actually use the bars to assist me getting in/out and up/down.

I know I put a lot of weight on, and a lot of trust in, the bars! :goodvibes

I am going to look at them though, as a possibility for my mother. I know having them to simply steady her getting in/out of her home shower would be a blessing. She would not pull herself as I do, she would simply use it as a steadying/security feature and I bet those would work well.

Thanks again to all you wonderful people that are so willing to share information and suggestions... this forum is awesome! :goodvibes
