So we went on the Star Wars cruise on the Fantasy 2 weeks ago and one thing that was very noticeable was that the pools closed earlier than any other cruise we've ever been on. Those of you with young kids know there's nothing like the allure of night swimming.

This is our 7th Disney cruise and on every other cruise the pools and aqua duct closed at 11 (except for Pirate night). This cruise the pools were only open until 10. I know it's only an hour but that hour made a huge difference. We had early dining, so we saw the 8:30 show in the Walt Disney Theater. So the kids had to sprint to the room, get changed to enjoy 20 minutes of night swimming. Not a huge deal, but they loved swimming between 10 and 11 as the aqua duct was so much less crowded at that time.

Wonder why this is the case?

I think this started sometime last year. There was a bit of kerfluffle on the DIS boards about both the family pools and adult only pool closing earlier than in the past.

Yeah. Adult pool stayed open until 11. Very disappointing. No idea why and no one on board could give me an answer.

My opinion: 2 reasons not many people use the pools at night and because now that they have lifeguards they have to be the ALL the time the pool is open.

I actually think they closed at 9 pm one night when we had kids swimming on the wonder a few weeks ago. Movie was still showing and kids had to get out of pool. There were plenty of kids swimming when they said closed.

Aren't the lifeguards only on the family and kid's pools?

I suppose, if the reason for closing them early was due to not having enough staff for late hours, then they would close the adult pool also (even if it doesn't have lifeguards) to remove the temptation for kids to use them. Especially when no one is in the pool when it's technically open.

It was the pool in the middle of the ship with funnelvision on the wonder. Sorry to confuse.

One of my biggest pet peeves. We love swimming and using the hot tubs late at night. That's about the only time they aren't kid soup. That just puts one more check in the pro column for me ditching my DCL cruise and sailing with RCCL instead.

Agreed 1000%. It drives me nuts also - and it's not just DCL. They are doing it at WDW also. It's ridiculous.

Yes, we have noticed this. This is one of my DH pet peeves with DCL. Especially, in the summer months when it is so hot out. We have noticed all this did was made the children run over to the hot tubs, which we have never used, so this is not a problem for us. I actually, posted this same problem after I cruise last summer. We are booked for another cruise this November so it will be interesting to see what time they close the pools this time of year.

March 2013 on the fantasy a 4 year old almost drowned. The child is in bad shape probably for life. Disney paid a muti million dollar lawsuit. Now they have life guards. Since than the pools close earlier in the kids pools.

I agree. Sometimes we were the only family at the pool. We would ask if they wanted us to get out so they could "go home" but they always said they had to stay til the end, so no need to go.

And yes! We had 9pm closings on the Wonder too. And not on deck party nights either.

Saw a story on the news the other night that a family is suing Carnival foe not having lifeguards after an almost drowning of their son ( thank goodness he is fine).
If lifeguards become the norm on cruise ships my guess would be pools closing early on all ships that have them??

I am surprised that they won, that is quite a precedent considering that hotels are setup exactly like the cruise ships. Curious when this happened, it for sure never made the news of any sort.

When we went in January, the adult pool was at least open till 11 even though it was pretty cold out, pre cruise the chat was even the adult pool was closing early. We didn't pay attention to the kids pools. This was on the magic.

Just checked the Navigators and goofy pool was 10 or 8 on pirates night, and adult pool was mostly 11 but 10 on a couple.

I had not heard that case was resolved. It would normally take a very long time to get through the courts.

It's possible they may have settled without admitting any wrongdoing but I would think any outcome of the case would have been all over the news and these boards. Haven't seen or heard a peep.

I actually just went looking and can't find anything, not even a mention of a suit being filed. I don't have a Lexis-Nexis or Westlaw account so I can't do a thorough search but there isn't anything readily available.

Kind of surprised, by that, also the fact that it was out there on his site. Usually those are not supposed to get out, unless he was speculating?

Really feel for the family regardless, I can't imagine what they are going through still.

We were on the Magic last year and TOTALLY appalled by the pool hours. Our kids were 9 and 10 for reference. We are from the West Coast, so working on a later schedule. The family pool was closed from 6-8. We had late seating. So the only option for swimming then was the little kiddy pool (which seemed odd, as most families with little ones were eating at this time). Couldn't go swimming after dinner as they were closed. So our kids favourite thing, watching movies on the funnel vision from the pool, (especially evenings when it's not so crowded) was not an option...
