Pools at Disney World

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this:

My daughter has a horrible time with pools, her eyes swell almost shut, her face gets red and blotchy and she sneezes like mad. The exceptions have been when we use the pools that are mineral fed or the Storm Along Bay at the Yacht Club. What does Disney do to their pools that makes such a difference?

We are afraid to book any other resort except the Yacht Club or Beach Club because of this issue. Has anyone else had a child with this type of problem? Where it was next to impossible for them to enjoy a pool because of the chlorine levels?

Does anyone know if the pools at Disney are all done the same way? Do they use some other technology or method other than just standard chlorine?

they don't use chlorine - they use something else. don't remember what they use.

have you tried giving her an allergic pill -antihistamines before and after she swims?

what they use is better for the water and less people react to it.

I wonder if they use ozone instead of chlorine.

Blue Lizard Sunblock/creme. I used to get HORRIBLE reactions, found out after the fact that I was allergic to an ingredient in most sunblocks. Since using this, NO PROBLEM!!!

We stayed at the Poly last Sept and swam in the quiet pool. Within an hour after we got out of the pool I had a red rash on my legs. Needless to say we didn't swim again. I thought maybe it was too much clorine; good to know it was Bromide so I can Google it and see if it's a know allergen. Thanks for the info.

What about swimming at night when no suncsreen would be required? That would tell you if it sun screen related.

Have you taken your daughter to an Allergist? He/She could probably help you too.

We have never had any physical problems with the pool, but for 3 years now my daughter's bathing suit has had a major issue with fading/discoloration. Have never had this issue anywhere other than Disney pools.

My son has to use goggles or his eyes turn bright red and water. This only happens at the Disney pools. He swims her at the pool in town with out any problems so it must be whatever they are using.

You can get the same things from Chlorine ...ALL pool chemicals are dangerous and can cause reactions in people.I have had a pool forever and ours was recently changed to salt water and even that can cause issues.Disney has used it for YEARS now, realtively few have had issues.With the amount of fecal contaminent, that enters DIsneys water daily they have no choice but to use heavy duty sanitizers.Better that then get sick.Alot of community pools now use Bromine as well

Most public/hotel pools I have been to in the last 3 years or so have stopped using chlorine and use, as a previous poster said, bromine. I find you can tell because there is no chlorine smell and if you accidentally get some of the water in your mouth, it tastes a little salty. (or my dd who complains about it has strange taste buds.) I have a friend who never had problems with pools before but now has terrible allergic reactions.

I saw the pool over at the BCV close 2x in the span of one afternoon for code browns..I can only imagine what its like

Yea I could give her an anti-histamine but I know when our body reacts to something we need to pay attention. I was just curious because I wanted to try out the POFQ again, and was curious if we would be able to use pools there like we can at the Yacht Club. It was so nice to see my daughter truly enjoy swimming at a pool with out any discomfort.

ozone, now that would be interesting. Last time we stayed at the Yacht Club we asked what type of system they were using but no one seemed to know. It would be nice to know because if we could duplicate the system we could put a pool in at our house.

Geesh, it makes one wonder about those code browns. Never really thought about those, daughters have been out of diapers for quite some time.

I have never heard of using Bromine in high concentrations before, I know chlorine is used because it is so very cheap, not because it is safe.
