Dh opened our pool.. this is our first year to do so. Oh my it looked as if the creature from the Black Lagoon had been residing in there this winter :O!

Anyway dd-16 wants to have a party on Friday which is the last day of school. Any suggestions??? This will be her first pool party.

Thanks!

We never really "open" our pool. We keep it open all winter (we only clean it once every two weeks or so during the winter...but we keep the filter going and chemicals in it).

We usually swim from the first of April through October (sometimes November). It just depends on the weather.

DS (13) is having a "swimming party" in a few weeks. We're just letting him invite his friends and it is going to be Hawaiian/ Luau themed. We'll let them swim and "hang out" on the back porch. It's going to be pretty casual. I'm not going to stress about it too much because I've learned that they pretty much come to swim and visit with each other.

I wish, still a little to chilly in New England

I am afraid of what it's going to look like when we do open it...

We keep ours open year round, even when it is still to cold to swim.

We leave our pool open all year too. It looks bad now. We've had a lot of rain and our pool is very green. Yuck!

My one word of advice-even though your daughter is 16, I would still make sure an adult is keeping an eye on the pool every minute during the party. An accident can happen in a second, and you never know who might be a weak swimmer. Someone needs to be assigned the task of watching the pool-don't try to do it yourself. You will constantly be running around getting towels for guests who forgot to bring them, bringing food out from the kitchen, etc.

Have fun!!!!!!!!

We planned on opening it this weekend but the weather has been icky so we are going to hold off a week or so. We just got our pool last year so this will be our first opening. I peeked under the cover and it looks pretty clean and clear still. Now we just have to get the cover off without all of the leaves and stuff falling in.

DH just opened our pool. It looked pretty good and in a couple of days (and a lot of chemicals) it's clear. Our water is too cool for swimming now.

We usually open ours around this time (Ohio) but we're heading to DCL and WDW in a week, so we don't want to leave the maintenace to someone else (possible filter problems, low water, chemicals, etc etc)

We've opened our pool the last 7 straight years and it looked totally green and nasty! Usually it takes about a week of pretty hefty chemicals and lots of filtering to get looking good. Kreepy Krauley helps a LOT. But with all that filtering and vacuuming, the filter needs to be backwashed a lot, so yet another reason we don't want to leave it for someone else.

Here's a hint for next year....as soon as it starts getting sunny, pump a gallon or two of bleach into the pool once a week (for us this starts usually mid-march or early april) We just pour ours through the mesh cover and then run a hose for awhile to clean the cover and circulate the water. The water will still be green when you open it, but will require less care. Btw, regular store brand bleach is fine....no need for "pool chlorine" which is much more expensive. Just don't get the bleach with perfumes and all that....get straight bleach.

p.s. don't be surprised what you find in your pool as you clean it. Usually we find lots and lots of dead bloated worms and sometimes there will be a dead mouse. :earseek: Thank goodness for chlorine!!!

wow.. I am glad to know that the gross green mess that was in the pool is ''normal" We had it closed by the professional pool guy.. I was stunned at how gross the pool got over the winter. The gross bugs, worms and mice freaked me out.. I told DH to stop reporting what he found in there... Dh worked on it every day for a week .. it is sparkling and pretty now.

Our Scotties chase field mice into the pool.. frogs too. It is a hysterical adventure every day! I think it must be their version of Letterman's "will it float"

Thank you for the tips and such.. gotta love the DIS!! :thumbsup2

We too keep ours open year round. It looks great right now, nice and clear. And even though it's already started getting up into the 90's here, the water itself is still a little too chilly for our liking.

My pool is open all year too - DD has been swimming since April, but it is just now getting to my liking. This weekend will be my first weekend house guest that will be using the pool! We put on some Buffett, and open up some beers and relax and enjoy! It's going to be hot hot this weekend so it will be great!

My pool is serviced once a week all winter long, that way no icky stuff to deal with once swimming time gets here.

We have a community pool in our neighborhood. it opened the first of may, but I just went swimming this past sunday. it was so cold, i couldn't breathe. but it's been warmer the past few days so maybe it will be warmer tomorrow. :thumbsup2

Our pool is also open year round. And if it were up to the kidlings, they would be in it every minute. :thumbsup2

Our pool is open all year. DD started swimming in March this year-brrrrr. We live in south Louisiana so basically we swim from March through November.

Our opening is scheduled for this Saturday. We have our fingers crossed for a dry, relatively warm day. Swimming won't start for a few weeks, but it's much nicer to look at a sparkly pool than a gross, swampy cover.

Do you have a loop lock cover? If so, there are chemicals you can put in it every three or four months over the winter that keeps it clear.

Good luck!

We have a cover on the pool... I am not sure which type it is.. it is soft and mexhy.... before we got the portable fence around the pool.. the dogs liked to think they could walk on water.... LOL I would find them on the top of the pool in the middle of it all... they looked so proud of themselves. :rotfl:

I just got a postcard in the mail today from our pool company. They will be out on June 1st to open our pool. :) I sure hope it warms up A LOT by then!

Ours is open. We bought the house in February and the previous owners kept it open all winter so we continued doing what they had done. We have been learning about cheimcals, etc... and so far have a pretty good handle on things. Kids swam back around Easter but the water was Cooooold! The weather has been too cool to swim since then. Hopefully it will warm up soon. We are excited to be new pool owners!
