We usually open ours around this time (Ohio) but we're heading to
DCL and WDW in a week, so we don't want to leave the maintenace to someone else (possible filter problems, low water, chemicals, etc etc)
We've opened our pool the last 7 straight years and it looked totally green and nasty! Usually it takes about a week of pretty hefty chemicals and lots of filtering to get looking good. Kreepy Krauley helps a LOT. But with all that filtering and vacuuming, the filter needs to be backwashed a lot, so yet another reason we don't want to leave it for someone else.
Here's a hint for next year....as soon as it starts getting sunny, pump a gallon or two of bleach into the pool once a week (for us this starts usually mid-march or early april) We just pour ours through the mesh cover and then run a hose for awhile to clean the cover and circulate the water. The water will still be green when you open it, but will require less care. Btw, regular store brand bleach is fine....no need for "pool chlorine" which is much more expensive. Just don't get the bleach with perfumes and all that....get straight bleach.
p.s. don't be surprised what you find in your pool as you clean it. Usually we find lots and lots of dead bloated worms and sometimes there will be a dead mouse.

Thank goodness for chlorine!!!
