Pool Hoggers

I've spent many trips to SAB and watch the lifeguards remove towels from chairs not used. This is the only Disney pool where I've seen lifeguards consistently remove towels. If there are shoes and personal items (books, bags) then they leave them, but if only resort towels, they are gone once the lifeguard walks by.

I've seen the lifeguards at the WL do this also.

I am not a little guy and probably look more intimidating than I really am so I don't get much feedback when people come looking for their "chair or table". I watch for 30 minutes or so an if no one shows up, I remove the items, put them in back of where I am sitting and enjoy myself. This is so rude to save chairs and tables. If everyone followed the rules, there would not be a shortage in the first place. I also have no problems telling people they are smoking in a non-smoking area but that is a different thread isn't it?? This all seems to happen quite a bit at the main pool at OKW and on the Disney adults pool area. Don't seem to remember it happening much at WL DVC pool area or the main pool. Maybe they remove them there...smjj

It's definitely one of my pet peeves. I didn't really notice it until we started taking cruises. We would go to the 'adult' pool and find a sea of empty chairs covered in bags and towels with maybe 10 people in the pool.

I'm so glad I have to sit in the windiest part of the ship so that your bag can enjoy a spot by the pool.

We have on several occasions on the ship, moved towels. They know they are breaking the rules and most do not complain(at least out loud)...smjj

The problem with that is that it is too easy to figure it out. If I were one of the rude people I would just take one of the large disney shopping bags, put a resort towel in it, and reserve the seat anyway.

We are staying in a one bedroom standard view until the 27th July.
I noticed this practice on tuesday and the table we normally come down to was occupied by towels belonging to a family who left and went to the parks for the day and returned late afternoon.

Omigosh, this drove me crazy at HHI! Last trip there, my sister and I saw a woman drop off her big bag at the pool in the morning when we were going for coffee. She set up on a table and a few lounge chairs with towels.
A few hours later, we saw her at the beach house- she was still on her lounge when we headed back to the resort, but when we got back to our villa (overlooking the pool, we noticed her bag and towels where she had left them in the morning.
We took to having a cup of coffee on the balcony every morning after that, and watched her set up every morning, the same way:scared1:

Fortunately for us, she was the only one who did that- so we never had a problem getting a table or lounge chairs by the pool.

Although this has happened at several places, HHI is where it bothered me the most. The number of lounge chairs around the pool seemed very small when we were there in April. On Easter Sunday, after walking all around, I only found one "open" chair (good thing DH had gone to the Heritage and wasn't with me). All around me were chairs "marked" with towels, bags, etc. I sat reading for about 3 hours (OK I was interrupted by a visit from Shadow during that time too) and not once did anyone approach those other chairs. I wondered-if it's this busy in April, it must be impossible in the summer. That's a fairly small area.

I've seen the lifeguards do this at Kidani Village on more than one occasion. :thumbsup2

That same family must live there, because I've witnessed this on almost every stay at the BWV. They take a table, 4 chairs and 2-4 lounge chairs. When we get to the pool, esp at BLT we are lucky to get one chair for the six of us -- and it's not a lounge chair either. Several times we had to sit on the concrete while at the BLT pool...we'll be back there in 4 weeks, so I'm sure not much as changed. I guess it doesn't bother anyone that someone's grandmother and grandfather have to sit on the ground at the pool so they can watch their grandkids at the pool. I'm OK getting down on the ground, but gotta have someone pull me back up. Not once did anyone ever offer us a chair or a lounge during any of those visits....not that I expected it, but it would've been a nice gesture and certainly one I would've offered to someone else. Esp. when there are families holding loungers for their kids who spend about 95% of their time in the water. In our family, the kids don't even get a chair as I know they won't use it and others need it more.

I always look at towels on pool lounges as a very thoughtful act of kindness. How did they know that I'd come along, needing a place to plop, and find the lounges they saved for my family?

Just another little speck of pixie dust as far as I'm concerned!

:rotfl:

This is why i am glad i dont have to sit infront of the pools. At the kidani pool there are some lounge chairs away from everything else that are usually empty.

PLus my wife and I cannot stay at the pool for more then an hour anyway or we get incredibly bored. We usually swim then leave. so if we dont have a chair oh well.

The lifeguards are supposed to routinely go out and move any 'deserted' towels from chaises around the pool. I wish they would also remove the obviously well placed personal items as well...I mean seriously. They can tell if the book as moved for the past 2 hrs. I was at the quiet pool, at BW, over by Community Hall, early one morning. There were 2 tables/chair sets that had 'stuff' on them, as well as about 5 or 6 chaises around the pool..in prime spots. Now, you know what was funny?? It was about 10am, and there wasn't a soul in the pool. So, who did those 'things' belong to??? Good thing there were other options for seating.
But I have had to sit way in the back at BW before. Hard to watch my child if I'm over behind a tree. And then to sit there and look at all those unoccupied seats??? Drives me nuts.

Maybe the people who say nothing (like me) just need to be a bit more bold and take back the tables! ;)

if there is a sign - I will be speaking to the CMs/lifegaurds
but most people don't know that it is wrong & are afraid to move the things

During Christmas week a large group of people had around 12 chairs saved. I watched and waited about 20 minutes and no one came to claim them. I finally claimed 2 from myself and goofydad while our children swam. They finally returned about another 20 minutes later. One of the ladies asked why I had taken 2 of "their" chairs. My response was, "no one was using it so I sat down." She started to argue and realized maybe she didn't have a reason to argue. They only used about 5 of the chairs they had saved.
Something similar happened to us last month when we came to the AKL pool at 10:45. I found 3 chairs under an umbrella. Next to us someone had left their stuff but were nowhere in sight. 45 minutes after we came a family of 3 came. They sat next to us in their "saved" chairs and made a comment about how we took "their" chairs. They weren't here when we came. They still have their junk on their chairs and only one of the five they had "saved" are being used.

Unfortunately there is the reverse behavior -- moving your towels and bags when you walk away. At Castaway Cay we returned from lunch to find squatters had moved our stuff all to one chair and placed their stuff on the lounges under the umbrella. They were no where to be seen so I reversed their hostile takeover. They were quite indignant when they returned from their swim. But they picked up and moved on.

I would so be hustling that stuff down to the desk. "Gosh, I think someone forgot this -- it's been sitting down by the pool for three hours! Could you put it in the lost and found?" :littleangel:

My darling SIL  actually packs a cheap pair of flipflops and a paperback book from the dollar store every trip for the sole purpose to use as "chair saving tools" for her trip.:scared1:

She actually told me this while having a casual conversation about WDW. I was telling her about our latest trip and how we couldn't find one chair at the main pool at 11am. She seemed very proud of herself too:scared1: She is also a DVC member and feels entitled to EVERYTHING!!!:sad2:
