Pool Chair Question

During our trip to BWV in April it was almost impossible to get a chair by the pool during the day. The empty chairs all had resort pool towels lying on them. I assumed this meant someone was saving the chairs. After thinking about it I thought maybe people were just not taking their towels back to the towel return and just leaving them on the chairs. So my question is..Is it in good taste to remove the towels and sit in the chairs? I don't want anyone screaming at me for taking their chairs but I would like a place to sit by the pool and be able to keep an eye on my DS swimming. Thanks

I would not do it. If I get in the pool, leaving my towel on the chair, I would expect my chair to still be there when I get out of the pool.

IF there are no shoes or other obvious personal effects, I would go ahead and sit on the chair. BUT not move anything. If someone comes out of the pool and it is theirs, I would thank them for letting me sit there and then stand up to watch to my child.

Unfortunately, I have heard/read of people who put out towels and then leave the resort thinking it okay to come back later and claim that chair.

generally speaking, it is accepted that if after 20 minutes of you observing a chair with no change in status. it's okay to take it over.

That is kind of what I go with too. Even if you are at the pool area swimming, if you haven't used your chair for 20 minutes, you probably don't need it. Or at the very least, shouldn't mind loaning it to someone who does.

At the GF the CM walk around on a regular base and just remove the towels on chairs that are not used for a while. Simple and effective. :thumbsup2

If there are no personal items, I take a seat. We've been at BWV many times when there are many more chairs saved than people in the pool area. People come down in the morning and put towels on a chair for later in the day.

I also find it inconsiderate for families to get chairs for every member even though the kids are in the pool the whole time.

Just point those chairs out to the life guards and they will handle it as well.

I wish the CMS did more. It would be nice if they actually did remove towels from chairs after a certain amount of time, but in my experience they do not. My daughter and I witnessed a very nasty fight at the Beach Club the last time we stayed there. There were chairs not being used for hours and a family moved the towels (keep in mind that was all that was on them. I always leave some kind of personal item. On second thought, my family never all leaves at the same time. At least one of us is ALWAYS there). The "towel" family came back and started screaming and yelling, using very bad language. The "nice" family left in tears. I had witnessed the whole thing and spoke with the "nice" family and said I agreed with them. ANYWAY, the CMS did nothing, even when some guests went and talked to the CMS and told them what was happening. Moral.....I would never remove towels. I would talk to the lifeguards/CMS, but I would not expect that they would do much. It depends, some may, but IMHO they don't want to get involved. People are so selfish. We only use the chairs when we are actually using the chairs. When we are done we leave. We don't leave things and then decide to come back 2 hours later. Very rude. If everyone did this there would be no problems. Just my 2 cents.

I disagree only for this reason.

When you are swimming in the pool then your still in the vicinity of the pool chairs and there are no rules saying after 20 minutes you will lose them. So why should those people who are following the rules lose their pool chairs?

Now if you go to the pool area see that no one is in there and all the chairs are covered with towels, then it's obvious they went to the parks or are somewhere around the resort. Well then you should tell one of the lifeguards who should then remove their towels and etc, because when guests do that it's not fair.

I wish they had a safe area to put your items if you don't plan on using a chair or table. Sometimes it's just the kids and I at the pool, and I'm swimming with them. In that case, we don't need seats, but I do need a place to put our bag and towels that's not in a walkway or easily stepped on or damaged.

I would also ask a CM if the seat is taken. They'll either say yes or move the towels, and you're good to go. We did this at the DLH last week. TONS of "front row" chairs with resort towels. We wanted to watch the kids on the monorail slides, but the only open chair was three rows back, and I couldn't really see well. We were able to get two chairs near the end of the front row. No one returned to the chairs during the hour we were there. They either saw us and chose new chairs or had left the area.

I would never move a towel. I find it annoying that all the chairs seem to be "taken" - every time we arrive at the pool.

We find a spot, even if it's along a wall - then put our things down together. It certainly beats a fight of any kind.

As I said, if you are swimming for that long, you are not using the chair, and should be kind enough to let someone else use it. After all they are chairs, not towel holders, and meant to be used as chairs.

I don't agree, but in any case your 20 minute limit would lead to major confrontations at the pool amongst guests. There are many adults who either stay in the pool by themselves or with their kids for more than 20 minutes, so your suggestion is not only unreasonable but it would also be impossible to be implemented. There is and never will be signage to this effect at any of the WDW pools, and I don't think the lifeguards are going to be standing there with a stop watch. Additionally, if there are no time limits on chairs at Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon, do you really think this would ever happen at a resort pool?

I would move it, if it was only a towel. I don't think many show up with at least a cover up or flip flops.

If someone comes back and says it's their chair, I would simply say, Oh I am sorry I did not see you sitting here. I asked the lifeguard and they said I could sit here. :)

I would never put my stuff on a chair then stay in the pool for a long period of time.

why would a hotel towel hold a chair??? I would assume the CMs set them out for guest to use -- at least at the fancier hotels

I would never move anyones personal belongings. Although this did happen to me in April. I came back to my poolside chair after going to the pool bar to get a drink to find all of my things replaced with someone elses. As I am looking for my shoes, bag, towels, ect..some guys says to me "My family wanted to sit together so I moved your stuff over there" and "over there" was at the hot tub area. I was  furious since you cannot see the pool from the hot tub area. So I spent the rest of the time at the pool standing and watching my son swim. My question was refering to resort towels only on the chairs not personal belongings. I guess next time I could just ask a CM and maybe they can help with the chair situtation. Thanks

This:

Exactly. If there is only a towel there I think you can assume the following:

1. If there is no cover-up, t-shirt, shorts etc. the pool goer traipsed through the hotel in their bathing suit. While that is conceivable in a value or moderate due to the outside corridors it is still very unlikely.

2. If there are no shoes, the pool goer either left their room barefoot or are wearing their shoes in the pool. Again, not very likely.

Based on the number of towels only on chairs it would appear that someone just put down the towels to save the chairs.

I welcome ideas on other possibilities contrary to what I stated above. :flower3:

you know you are right, I have never seen a towel say; "Excuse me but this chair is taken" :lmao:

And no the staff does not put towels out on chairs, it's the guest thinking it will work to save a chair. :sad2:
