Ponchos

I would like recommendations for the best thing to do if it rains. Do you recommend disposable ponchos? How many would you bring for a family of 5? Anyone think re-usable ponchos work better? What about umbrellas- do you recommend umbrellas and/or ponchos?

Many love ponchos. I prefer small light umbrellas. We don't like how hot you get under a poncho and they tear easily, and are hard to put away wet. YOur feel get wet no matter what so pay attention to your choice of footwear and socks!

We use Coleman ponchos that we purchased at Target in the camping section. They make kids and adult sizes. They were a little expensive (around $20 each) but they fold up into their own little bag, weigh nothing and the material feels a lot like cloth. Bonus is that they don't stick to you when wet like disposable plastic ones do.

Ponchos.... We have Disney yellow ponchos we bought over 10 years ago... More like vinyl... Never a problem..

We laugh at the person trying to put on the cheap throw always.... Ripping, not covering, thin, flimsy really a waste of money....

Disney ponchos are easy to fold back up and dry quickly and we just get a store bag to tote back around ...

I prefer the disposable "emergency" ponchos. I've had the Disney ones and the cheap ones. Honestly, I prefer the thin lightweight cheap ones. Also, I just buy enough to use a new one each day in the park if needed and toss it out after use. You can reuse them if they don't get torn, but if you plan to do so, I recommend not leaving it in a storage bag but getting it out to rinse and to thoroughly dry. If you don't, they start to smell bad. That applies to all ponchos, cheap or not.

Yep, I think these are worth the investment if you go at a potentially rainy time of year. The little disposable ponchos stick to your legs when wet - it's such a pain to have to peel them off your legs every step you take.

We always use ponchos. We bought some a few trips ago at MK and use them every trip. They fold up easily and are easy to put on in a sudden downpour and take off as soon as the rain stops. I just stuff them back in my bag, then when we get back to our room hang them up in the shower to dry. Mine then stays in my suitcase for the next trip!

Umbrellas don't play well with others. The ends are right at eye-level.

We bring both re-useable and disposable to WDW. Usually we each carry a disposable poncho just in case or to use on splash or kali. If itis raining in the morning when we leave the hotel or looks like all day rain then we take the re-useable ones instead.

Reusable ponchos were great for us. I didn't want to bother with an umbrella. We bought Frog Togg ponchos at walmart for about 10 dollars each. They were wonderful but kept us warm at the same time and in the summer you don't need that. It wasn't sweating so bad, though, that I didn't want to use it. Definitely will bring those again for our next trip!

I highly recommend disposable ponchos. We went in May (rainy season) this year & it was great to just have them in the bag & not worry about them if they ripped, we had more. We also didn't have to worry about trying to dry it off & fold it back up for reuse later. Yes...not eco-friendly, but highly convenient.

We just spent 4 days at WDW. It rained and rained and rained. The entire time. We knew this going into it, so we were prepared. If you are able, dress appropriately for rain. We wear quick dry clothing. This way...if it isn't REAL rain, we can usually continue with our touring plans and get to our next place, which often offers shelter and entertainment...and we are dry by the time we continue on with the day.

We do bring what they call emergency ponchos. We haven't had issues with them ripping. We throw them away at the end of the day. Like someone else said...convenient but not too eco-friendly. This trip, we managed to get them all back into their first containers when we had to take them off but might need to reuse on the same day, but I made a note to bring a larger Ziploc to put them away during the day so we didn't have to try to fold/roll them so small again.

I pack one poncho per person per day of our trip. I invested in them several years ago. I think I bought them for 89 cents each at Academy? We have never needed them every day before this trip...I would just bring home the unused ones to save for future trips.

I wouldn't bother with umbrellas in the parks. Maybe DTD.

We have always used the disposable emergency ponchos. Never had one rip. we even used them during torrential rains for 5 days during a tropical storm one year. The only problem seems to be that the hood is too big/wide and blows off easily. We bring small binder clips to clip them closed.

I have been getting them at Walmart for 88 cents for years, but we went to three different stores this week and couldn't find them. The third store finally told us they were recalled and didn't know if they'd be getting them back at all. Does anyone know where else to find them cheap? I found some in a dollar store, but they were in a much bigger package and I really want the small ones.

Thanks! Yes, that is the size we usually buy. Unfortunately, it looks like there are no Academy stores in NJ. They offer free shipping over $39 though. Maybe I can think of something else that I "need" to bump my order up, LOL! Or maybe we can stop at one on our drive to Disney.

I actually kind of love those $8.50 Disney ponchos, although with a family that could definitely get pricey. I just like the material because it doesn't stick to you and I've found them to be pretty reusable. Oh, and the Mickey on the back is pretty precious too!

I usually pack some of the dollar store ponchos in just in case we get caught in a little rain. However, if it rains hard, those things are all but useless. Last year we were at DS and it started to rain hard. And it never let up. I ended up buying a few of the Disney ponchos, and they worked much better.

We too just came back from a trip where it rained everyday. We used disposable, but I did buy they heavy Disney Vinyl for the kids b/c I figured they would like it. My son did manage to tear the heavy vinyl one...go figure. Either way I was tossing them all at the end of the trip so it was fine. Anyway, wore the cheap ones every time it rained and never had an issue. It was easy to open and they never stuck to me either. Mine came from dollar tree and it was nice to toss them when I was done.
