Hello everyone,

I know this topic pops up every now an again but I couldn't find the first thread about it so I figured I'd just post a new one.

We are going to a MNSSHP and of course it goes on despite rain. Usually a little rain is no big deal but since we will be in costumes we dont want to be in soaking wet outfits the whole night and thought getting some ponchos might be good for prep and we can use them the whole trip. I was thinking about just purchasing the Disney Poncho's online but first wanted to know if there are any you guys recommend in that price range that I can order.

Thanks!

This topic from what I've seen here generates a lot of controversy with people falling into two different camps.

For me, I'm of the "buy a cheap one from Wal-Mart for $.99 and throw it out when you're done" camp. We've been doing it for years. They do a perfectly fine job of keeping us dry, even in a heavy t-storm, and will dry and fold up just like an expensive one. We actually don't throw them out after one use. We get plenty of uses out of them, though knock on wood it's been fairly rare that we needed them. Plus, if you're wearing a costume, the Wal-Mart ones are clear, so it won't hide your costume.

I think the ones you get from the Disney parks are great too. To save yourself the trouble you could just pick some up as soon as you get in any park. In MK you will find them in the Emporium store on your left as you face the castle. If it isn't raining you will need to ask for them as they have them behind the counter. Have a great time!

Yeah The cheaper ones I can toss and not worry about, I didn't think of that.

I didn't know you can replace them if they get damaged thats good to know! that alone might be worth the cost knowing if anything happened I can replace it. Do you know if they sell the clear/sheer/white ones in the parks? I heard they also sell yellow and I wouldn't want that one.

I believe they are all the whitish-clear ones now. The yellow ones are the older version and are no longer sold. Many people miss the old yellow ones.

They were selling the white ones a few weeks ago.

The Disney ones are the whitish-clear, kind of like a shower curtain. They are more durable then the cheap ones, but I go with the cheap-ones because I don't want to have them get moldy since I only use them at the park. But, if you can get a CM rain gear, those are great.

I like the cheap ones because I can fit one in my small purse and throw it out afterwards. If it's more of an all day rain event I bring my Disney poncho in a backpack along with a zip-lock storage bag to keep it in once it's wet.

Yes, all the Disney ones are the white/clear ones...except for a small shop near the Maharajah Jungle Trek in AK. They sell different (red?) ones, which are themed to that area (I don't remember exactly what was on them). I found this out when I went to get a new poncho/trade in. Fortunately, across the walkway they were selling the Disney ones and I had no problem trading my ripped one for a new one.

The Disney park ones are sturdy. Mine has seen 9 trips. All my trips are 8-10 days. On two trips we used the ponchos every day.

I should add that we don't "throw them away" per se with the cheap ponchos. Since they're plastic, we actually put them in recycling, so hopefully they're not just laying in a landfill. We've found the cheap ones to be amazingly sturdy too. We use them repeatedly before we recycle them...and we only recycle them when we're done with our trip and if we know we're not coming back for quite a while. We had an AP for mid-2015 to mid-2016 and we used the same set of ponchos the entire year. Recycled them when our AP expired and will be a new set next summer when we get our new AP.

I would take the cheap under a dollar throwaway ones with you in your purse because they are small and easy to carry and if the rain catches you off guard you can throw them on, and then if radar shows something coming straight at you that day, or if it starts raining I would buy the WDW ponchos. They come out at pretty much every counter in every store when it rains, and even if it is not raining yet if you ask for them, they will pull some out for you. The resort gift shops have them too. We've tried several different ponchos at WDW and always come back to the WDW ones. The cheap ones usually rip the first time we sit down in a ride and the more expensive ones, the hood either comes down over my eyes or water runs down the neck. We love the WDW ones. No sense spending money on them unless you really turn out to need them though since they are readily available.

I take the cheap .99 ones as I agree they are small. But they also do not work as well I use them only on rides like Kali and Splash, I use "old - 10 years now" WDW ones that have served me well over multiple trips. They just feel better too

My personal preference are the Disney ponchos, as they can last years and you can keep bringing them back trip after trip. With WalMart ponchos one tiny rip and you're out of luck

We started bringing our own when the kids were little. Nothing like looking for young kids when they are wearing the same poncho as everyone else. We usually go for the cheap ones, but I'll find them in blue or green, something that stands out. I've also found some around town with our local colleges on them.

I like getting the $3-5 ponchos from Walmart (or other similar type store). They are usually sturdier than the $1 ponchos but they are not that expensive that I feel bad about tossing them after a few uses.

I've done it all. The 99 cent then toss it, the Disney ones (which last for years) and this year I got the IKEA ponchos and LOVE them. They are longer, they have no open gaps down the side for all that rain to come in, the hood fits well, they are easy to shake off and dry much faster than the Disney ones and they fold up into their pockets. Was just there in rain and stayed super dry!

(They have matching fold up totes, two sizes of backpacks, umbrellas ... all very light and since they seem to be same fabric they would be water repellant.

We have all the colors. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50330499/

I have not tried umbrellas, FL rain does not tend to operated down as much as sideways, they are a pain to carry and I don't think they have any place in places with lots of people.

I really like that the hood adjust. It looks a little Sherlock Holmes to me.
