Polynesian Tokelau problem with exit signs

I had an incident coming in the side door of Tokelau that faces Pago Pago and Moorea. The exit sign is mounted on the wall, is mounted about 10” from ceiling and it is mounted almost 8’ from the door entry. Since it is almost 12” tall and extends from the wall about 12”-14”, it is not in a good spot.

Being 6’4” and rolling a suitcase and having an aching back where I was slightly stooped over, I banged my head very hard on the sign. I usually have a built-in radar about low items, but didn’t here. I also had a hat on that had a full brim all the way around that caused me to not see the exit sign. I hit the sign so hard the entire fixture was broken from the wall, and it was broken on the hangar. It didn’t come off, but it was very loose.

I did report it to Poly managers. One of the managers was as tall as I am and he would have the same issue.

Since I did this, I looked closely at other exit signs. As you look down the hall to each end of the floor when you are standing in the middle of the building, the end exit signs are about half way blocked by a light fixture. In addition, they are made out of a clear poly material with the exit letters in red. Looking down during the day, the sign blends in with the glass door and is not easily seen. It’s low enough that it is in “front” of the glass door. There is also an exit sign in the middle of the hallway that is mounted in the wall and way too low.

Side entry sign needs to be mounted hanging from ceiling where it is up higher and the background would be the small strip of the wall above the door where it can be seen (contrast). The ones at the ends of the hall can be mounted the same way. The one in the middle can be put in the wall where the elevators are located.

The current entry doors are manual double opening doors save the main side door.

Moorea does not have these issues. The end entry and side entry doors have a fixed side door and a sliding door with an electronic eye that opens the door hands free. The exit sign is mounted above the fixed door in the ceiling. I am not sure why DVC didn’t install the same setup in Tokelau as is in Moorea. They need to swap out the double manual entry doors with the above doors and this should solve the issues. If there was something they had to do differently when they converted Tokelau to DVC because of fire codes, they didn’t come up with a good solution. I see potentially dangerous fire issues with where the signs are located now. I don’t want to come out of a room and not be able to see the exit sign that will direct me to the exit door when there is smoke present in the hallway.

The response from the managers was that they have passed it along to Reedy Creek Fire Department. I am not sure that is an objective unit to handle the problem since it is controlled largely by Disney.
