Poly Question

I'm thinking of changing from POR to the Poly for our upcoming trip. My Mom will be renting an ECV to keep in the room with us. If we upgrade, it will be to a standard garden view room. I know I need to ask for a room on the ground floor (most likely), but what building should I request to be close the main building and such? Which is more convenient for ECV users?

Why not just request 'as close as possible to the main building'?

The most convenient room of all for an ECV user, to whom proximity is less of an issue (because of the ease of motorized transport) is the room that has a door that operates with a pushbutton. Anyone on an ECV who attempts to open a non-automatic door will find it almost impossible to open said door and drive the ECV through it at the same time. This makes mock of the independence desired by someone who goes to the trouble and expense of renting an ECV only to find themselves having to call down to the front desk to summon someone who can let them into or OUT OF their room. Been there, done that...I had them unhook the hydraulic arm on my POLY room's door for the night I arrived, and transfer me the next day to a different resort...one where such impediments to freedom did not exist (the Beach Club).

Don't even get me started Disney hasn't figured out a way for ECV and self-propelled wheelchair users to get into Cosmic Ray's without either assistance from another Guest, or some fancy maneuvering. Automatic room doors are probably never going to happen.

Well, they miraculously exist at the Beach and Yacht Clubs, as well as on the Magic and Wonder. If you nag them enough about unhooking the hydraulic arms from the resort doors that don't have them (POP, POR, POLY, are the most memorable) and then insist they move you to a resort that has automatic doors at the same rate you are paying at the original resort if they tell you that unhooking the arms is a fire hazard in interior corridors seems to get their attention. There's NOTHING I want less in a fire than getting stuck in a hotel room because I cannot exit properly!
I never did figure out why the stores at Downtown Disney don't all have automatic doors.

I am an EV user and think the Poly is a great choice for ECV users. We always stay there. The buildings all have elevators so you are not limited to a ground floor room.

If you request an older building, like Tahiti (check tikiman for a list of building) the rooms are bigger and easily fit the ECV without any fancy maneuvering. Note: Tahiti is farthest from the Great Ceremonial House--we like it cause it's closest to the monorail, which for me in an ECV is sort of the whole point of staying at a monorail resort. Since I am the only mobility impaired one in our family, as long as I have my ECV, no one else in our group cares how far from the main lobby we are.

The Poly is fabulous for a whole host of other reasons. I'm sure you'll enjoy!
