We have rented two rooms for October and I need to put my request in. I've narrowed between Samoa and Roratonga. Would love to hear your votes and why.
Our criteria- need adjoining rooms, will be swimming every afternoon with kids, not too far to transportation.

Either of those longhouses will be close to, well, everything! If adjoining rooms is your main priority (as it is with us when we travel with family) you might want to put that first even if it's not in either of those longhouses. Samoa is a highly requested longhouse, so you may have a better chance of connecting rooms at Rarotonga. This is far from the popular view, but we don't really want to stay in Samoa. It's directly across from the main pool and a major walkway. The pool can get really loud and we are big fans of quiet rooms! We prefer Rarotonga because it's still close to everything but is distanced enough where there isn't a lot of foot traffic or pool noise. Very peaceful! But in truth I would stay anywhere they put me as long as it was at the Poly!:goodvibes

We stayed in Rarotonga 2 weeks ago and loved it, close to everything and we had a nice quiet room on the third floor, we prefer being on top floor.

We requested either of those two buildings too but were put in Fiji. Just so you're prepared for that. I was disappointed.

Do you want "adjoining" (next to each other) or "connecting" (two rooms with interior doors that can open so you can walk between the rooms?).

I wouldn't necessarily ask for one specific longhouse if you've narrowed it down to two. I would decide what your priorities are first and go from there. Is it the adjoining or connecting rooms and you'd be willing to sacrifice location? Or would you rather have the location and sacrifice the adjoining or connecting rooms?

I would call the requests in and ask for (in order of whatever your priority is):

Adjoining or Connecting rooms (depending on what you are actually hoping for)
Close to transportation
Samoa or Rarotonga

Oh, I bet that was disappointing. I don't want Fiji either.

I do want connecting. I need to be able to drag the kids out of bed for rope drop!

I'm sure you do but just making sure you know connecting rooms are not guaranteed. You can request it, but you might not get it. I'm assuming you're prepared to deal with that if it happens, but just making sure! :-)

Yes, if that happens I'll find other ways to terrorize them out of bed!

We have stayed in the Rarotonga building twice now and LOVE it! Great location to the Grand Ceremonial house, pool and beach. The Oasis pool bar is right by it so you can go fill up your refillable mugs for coffee in the morning very easily. Easy walk to the monorail and the transportation center. It is really quiet and if you are on the side facing the pools, you can see a bit of the fireworks from your balcony. The second story does not have a balcony if I remember correctly, so if you want one, request the 3rd or 1st floor. The 3rd floor was nice since we didn't have anyone above us making noise.

This happened to us, too. We did get the two sets of connecting rooms that we requested which I was grateful for, but I was quietly disappointed when they said Fiji. It ended up being fine.

If you have standard view booked you most likely will not get Samoa. We stayed this past August with standard view and requested Samoa but did not get it. I was told at check in it was not a standard view building. They are changing some of the room bookings for standard to pool and lagoon view.
We were put in Rarotonga at the very end on the 3rd floor. It was a pretty long walk down the hall to the monorail and to Captain Cooks. Not as long as some resorts I have stayed at though. We used the monorail most of the time so it would of been better if I had requested close to the Ceremonial House.
If I was to choose another standard I would choose Niue first floor. Rarotonga is a good choice also.
