Poly greatly over rated

Bottom line: I just wanted to ensure there was some balance on this Board about the Poly and that anyone else in my shoes (researching for future trip) would have a more objective report.

I agree to this - however, I think you would have found that your opinions would have been very gratefully accepted if you'd worded them as opinions rather than fact.

Also, some of your statements were inflammatory, and most folks will read those and discount the rest of the report - even if it was correct and valid.

No one likes to be told that they have tacky taste!

There is a big difference in saying 'That place is tacky, and if you like tacky, this is the place for you', and saying, 'The place just didn't feel very expensive to me. Our family really likes to see rich furnishings at expensive hotels, and I just didn't see anything rich here. I was happy we didn't choose to stay here'.

I *completely* agree and couldn't have said it any better myself. :thumbsup2

The problem with your original post is the delivery. You basically insulted a bunch of people by using words like "tacky", "swanky" or that the pool is "poor". I hardly think ANY of the pools on Disney property could be described as "poor". Maybe one pool is nicer than the other, but hardly poor.

I like to hear negative reviews just as much as the positive. The negative reviews are very informative and point out things that I may not have thought of.

You sound like a very educated person. I'm just surprised at the approach you originally came with.

I'm sad to hear O'Hana has changed so much. Granted I haven't been there since 2003 but we really enjoyed our meal. The rice and wontons were my sons favorite things.

I hope you're enjoying AKL we had a blast there!! The night time animal viewing and the fire pit. We even loved the pepperpot soup down in Mara.
Have a great rst of your trip

We finally stayed at POLY XMAS eve and XMAS day 2 weeks ago. The beach area with castle in the background was outstanding and something we really enjoyed-especially in such a busy week and very warm-just a great escape. The monorail to MK was extremely enjoyable. The room was very nice with 2 queens and a very comfortable fold out couch/bed and well as a 32 inch flat screen. Kono was great as always.

As for the pool being far superior at CSR, can't agree after going through a volcano on the slide, popping out at the bottom, swimmimg to the end, walking out the zero entry onto a white sand beach on Bay Lake with Castle in the background-just beautifull.

My family stayed at the Poly in Nov. 2006. I've been wanted to post my opinion since then and haven't so maybe this is the time. First let me explain that my DS15 and I are total Disney lovers. With annual passes he and I made 6 trips in 2007. My DH and DS25 not so much. But DH being the great guy that he is sprung for the Polynesian concierge Hawaii, Magic Kingdom view. I convinced him to go Thanksgiving week so we could be there to spend the holiday with my brother, sis-in-law and nephew (NYer's now living in FL, we miss them a bunch). It was also nephews birthday. So hubby went all out for Poly which was DS choice.
DS and I loved the Poly. Being able to walk out on the balcony and see the MK every day, fireworks at night, caught the MVMCP fireworks one night, was awesome! We could see the ferries and boats on the lake, we could hear singing from the MK opening, we absolutely loved it. The convenience to the monorail(which was great for us because DH and DS25 left with the rental car for a couple of days to visit Grandma on the west coast).
DH was not impressed with the hotel. And as much as I love it I understand. This is a deluxe hotel. For a deluxe it is a little lacking. The newer deluxes have the sinks outside the bathroom which is very convenient when two people are trying to get ready. The shower heads in the bathroom are extremely low. As a 5'5" woman I just fit under the showerhead. My 6' to 6'2" DH and DS's had to squat under the shower. The rooms are also a little dark, which I don't mind at all until I'm trying to put on makeup. There was really no place with enough light. There is no hot tub. I have stayed at the Yacht Club and it is much more deluxe. Multiple hot tubs, (Oh and by the way I do love the volcano pool) seperate sinks and better lighting (at the sink area).
As far as Ohana, I did like the previous version of their dinner with the lazy susan that had the rice and wontons better than the current one with the scalloped potates. They are not mashed as others have been saying. They're actually very good. And the bread pudding is the best dessert ever!
I also enjoy the entertainment. I like the man who plays guitar and sings in the lounge (don't know his name). And Lipoa, as much as I feel that she really can NOT sing, does have a lot of fun with the crowd. Doing the coconut race and the hula, she's actually very entertaining.
So, I guess my conlusion to this is if you are a lover of WDW the Poly is a wonderful place to be. If deluxe accomodations are more important to you this may not be the place for you.

WDW offers so many resort selections it was tough. This Board has a GREAT Poly following and it really influenced me. I came really close to selecting the Poly. But due to seasonal rates, wife's desire for a Victorian theme, CSR's strengths (Pepper Market, Dig Site, Pools, etc..) and my love for animals (AKL) the Poly lost out. But I spent a lot of time researching Poly due to this Board's STRONG support.

Bottom line: I just wanted to ensure there was some balance on this Board about the Poly and that anyone else in my shoes (researching for future trip) would have a more objective report.

I agree that balance is good. It is nice to read differing opinions on the resorts at Disney. However when these opinions are mixed in with (perceived) inflamatory comments like cheap, swanky, tacky, etc. the opinion seems to become less objective and helpful, and more of an attack or something. This last post you made, I think, much better expresses your opinions on the Polynesian without appeating to be an inflamatory post trying to get people riled up.

You mention authentic resorts, I respectifully have to ask you if you think CSR is an authentic representation of Mexico? Is the food in Pepper Market authentic mexican cuisine? All of the resorts at Disney are really more fantasy than realistic copies of the theme they represent. Even the Grand Floridian. I don't think Cinderella was hosting a restaurant back around the turn of the century.

I haven't stayed at the Polynesian in years. I did stay there on my honeymoon years ago. I loved it. Not because it was a carbon copy of Hawaii, but because it it was a fantasy of what it may be like to be in the South Pacific somewhere on some island. Now we spend most of our vacations at Old Key West, which I am fairly certain isn't a whole like like what Key West is like today, or maybe ever, but it is beautiful none the less.

To each his own, it is good you have found resorts that you really like. That is what it's all about.

Disney never intended any of their themed resorts to be an exact replica of anything. Simply a resort with a themed presentation. As stated the Polynesian is not Hawaiian, there is a huge difference and yes there are many native Polynesians that work at the resort.

Also it is fine to not like something, but basically I feel you must stay at a resort to know whether you really experience all it has to offer. Visiting to walk around and have a look and dine is not the same as a multi night stay. There is no way to experience much of the special charm of the Polynesian without being a resort guest. You can definitely form an opinion, of a resturant but not the entire resort.

As to upsetting any loyal Polynesian resort fans, why in the world would anyone think that. One's opinion is not fact and therefore does not affect a different opinion. To think so, sorry, but, well is kinda full of one's self.

Glad you enjoyed the other resorts, they do have something special to offer also.

No offense taken here, OP -- truth be told, wish more people felt like you did, because would love to have a general public room-only code. Going back in 4 months. . . :cloud9:

I love Hawaii, liked the Poly when we had dinner at Ohana, and would definitely stay there IF they had a spa/hot tub/whirlpool. Without one it just seems to lack an important feature that a deluxe should have. Is there any reason they've never put one in? Are there any plans to ever have one?

It seemed to me that the GF spa was very close to the Poly. Maybe even half way? Maybe they feel it can easily service both resorts.

I've been following this thread - it cracks me up!:lmao:

I'm sure there are some guests out there who think they are REALLY going to a resort that is authentic and that all the Epcot WS pavilions as well as the restaurants are a substitute for the real thing. Disney has done a great job of theming - that's what it's all about, right??

After 3 nights at YC last summer, we asked to be moved to our favorite resort, WL. I did post about it. I didn't insult all the YC/ BC fans here by saying it was "stuffy" or "pretentious". I took my family's response to the resort to be the result of our normal everyday life here near an old seaside town - YC was so authentic as to be mundane!! FOR US!!!

After 7+ visits, we've decided we's still like to stay at the Polynesian if the rates ever get within my reach. GF, YC/BC, CSR, CBR just do not hold appeal for us right now, and WL keeps calling us back!

I think it's important, tho, to remember that YOU are not your favorite resort!! :lmao:

Here's a review of the Poly from a mid August 2007 stay. Posted on this thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1584541

We arrived at the Poly via Magical Express after stopping at the Contemporary. Upon arrival we headed straight for the front desk to check-in at around 1:30pm. We waited around 5 minutes for the next CM to become available and then we started the check-in process. The CM was very pleasant and greeted us with an “Aloha”.

As she was checking us in she commented on how we received a “great room”. I asked which building and she said Samoa. I then inquired to which room number and she said 1607. Our request was honored and we could not have asked for a better location. I based my request on information I got from a website we cannot discuss here at the Dis.

After completing the check-in we went straight to the room. Not a long walk from the GCH to Samoa. The room had two queen beds and a couch which turned into a twin sized bed. The room was clean and not as dark as I had expected.

The bathroom had a separate area for the toilet and one sink. We had plenty of towels and soap. There was a refrigerator just as you enter the room enclosed in a cabinet. Man did that cabinet get warm every day. I actually left it open to keep it vented while we were out of the room. It was big enough to hold everything we needed, leftovers and water bottles. I actually moved a shelf in order for use to be able to put water bottle in standing upright.

Housekeeping did a good job everyday. I left an envelope each day for a tip and we received plenty of refills on the soap and shampoo.

The location of Samoa building was the key for us. We came back almost everyday for a midday break and being able to simply walk out the sliding glass door and straight into the pool was very nice. It was also convenient to be able to sit on the patio and sip margarita’s we got from the poolside bar after our return in the evenings. It was also very nice when we got back midday or in the evening to be able to walk a short distance to Captain Cooks to refill our mugs.

The pool was not that big but it didn’t seem to be too crowded for my kids. They actually made some friends while we were there and swam with them and played water games. While I did not try the slide it was reported to me by my slide experts, DS and DD, that it was a lot of fun. Several of the evenings we watched the MK fireworks out by the pool and on a couple of occasions while swimming in the pool. The music from the show was played on speakers out by the beach.

On our resort day, my DW rented a Searaycer and took the kids out on the lake for rides. The first Searaycer she rented was not that fast. She returned about 10 minutes after leaving and exchanged it for another and she switched kids. Then she took my son back out on the faster one later. She initially rented it for 30 minutes then they charged in 5 minute intervals. She returned finally after about 40 minutes but they only charged her for 30 minutes.

After that, my daughter got a couple hair wraps put into her hair at the hut near the poolside bar and marina.

Captain Cooks was adequate for breakfast and lunches. We ate breakfast there a couple of mornings and the service was fast and the food was okay. Lunches were good also. My only complaint about it was the layout was very confusing and when they were a little busy it made it very difficult to maneuver around. We didn’t have a problem finding a table but I could see where that may be an issue during busier times.

O’hana’s was okay. We did the Character breakfast one morning and we ate there for dinner one night. The food at either was nothing to write home about. The atmosphere was nice and the character interaction at breakfast was very nice. The dinner was actually not that impressive. The food was not what I had expected. It didn’t stand out and in most instances it was overcooked and dry.

We did not try Kona Café or room service this trip.

I did go to Samoa Snacks and buy some snacks a couple of days. There was an okay selection nothing that extensive. But they had chips, pretzels, candy, nuts, etc. The basic snack food selection. They had a cooler where you could buy beer, wine, soda and milk.

Transportation at the resort was a big deciding factor in staying at the Poly. After our trip last September I realized that we would spend most of our time in MK and Epcot. We would spend a day and half in MGM and a half day or so in AK. With most of our time at MK or Epcot this resort made the most sense. We saved so much time with the monorail it was worth it.

When we went to MK we simply jumped on the monorail and never waited longer than 5 minutes. When we went to Epcot we walked over to the TTC and got the Epcot monorail from there. Now this was a longer walk since we were in Samoa but it was worth it. We waited at the TTC usually around 5 minutes for the next monorail.

The bus transportation was a bit different. We used buses to get to MGM, AK and Downtown Disney. We waited a minimum of 20 minutes for these to arrive and on a couple of occasions at least 30 minutes. We then had to stop at the Grand Floridian to pick up more guests and on a couple of occasions there not everybody could get on because the bus was crowded. We also had stops at the Contemporary or Wilderness lodge on the return trips. We stayed at AKL last September and never had an issue with buses there.

When we went to HDDR and mini golf/Boardwalk we took a cab. We never waited more than 10 minutes for a cab if one wasn’t already there.

We utilized the Neverland Club one evening so DW and I could go out to eat and the kids really enjoyed it. My DD made a craft and played games while my DS played video games the whole evening. They were fed dinner and a snack during the evening.

Overall, the appearance and cleanliness of the resort was top notch. I never noticed anything out of sorts while we were there. On our resort day I walked around the resort and took pictures and really soaked in the Polynesian feel.

In closing, I would say that our stay at the Polynesian was very, very nice. We all enjoyed staying there and definitely plan to stay there again.

I actually appreciate frank reviews about resorts/dining options. As long as people are respectful and well-informed, it only adds to the discussion. We made quite a few of our decisions on our last trip based on the experiences of others on this board. However, the key is respectful and well-informed.

I am SO confused. From Dictionary.com:

Swank·y /ˈswæŋki/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[swang-kee] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective, swank·i·er, swank·i·est.
elegant or ostentatious; swank.
[Origin: 1835–45; swank1 + -y1]

—Related forms
swank·i·ly, adverb
swank·i·ness, noun

—Synonyms stylish, chic, smart, fashionable

This was used to describe the Poly by the OP. ??????????????

I also don't get the vehement defense of the resort. So the guy didn't like it. I'd stay there if it wasn't so expensive.

Oh my goodness. Give the guy a break. So he used a few words that some took offense too. Is it really a crime? He wasn't making a personal attack against anyone he was just giving a review. As a new poster to the Dis what a bad impression he must be getting. :guilty:

I second that...it's not the Polynesian Boards, its the Disney Boards! :rotfl:

Hi Dave, Hi Luke! :wave2:

Heya!

Let's not forget: Disney's primary spokesman is a big talking mouse. Authenticity pretty much bit the dust when they opened Disneyland.

:rotfl2:

I stayed at the poly a few nights in 2001 and did not like it at all (i hope i have enough posts to say that)but then again I am allowed to not like it....i thought it was cheap looking and not worth the 300 + that it costs to stay there,

I HATED the old room decor. I thought it looked like something out of a motel 6. The new rooms are much nicer, with deep rich colors and a much more "upscale" feel.

However, I don't feel the Poly, or any of the Disney resorts, are "tacky". To me they are like a living, breathing travel brochure, ready to whisk you off to an idealized South Sea Island, New England shore, African safari base, or Northwestern cabin. Do I feel like I've been in an accurate representation of Old Faithful Inn when I stay at WL? No. Does it make me wish I could go to Old Faithful Inn sometime? Sure. Does Poly make me feel like I've visited the Hawaiian Islands? No. Does it make me wish I could? Sure.

That is a great analogy!!

Oh yeah, one more thing... It's unreal how Hawaii is "turning Japanese." Signs in Japanese everywhere!!! The Poly is more authentic than that - that's for sure. lol

LOL I guess I'm happy Disney isn't more authentic. Although there are a LOT of mormons working at the Polynesian :lmao:

On the other hand, I don't think that a buffet that is 100% representative of Hawaiian foods would appeal to the masses...not everyone is going to go nuts over sides like sticky rice and macaroni salad that has enough mayo in it to cause heart disease.

Anaka Kaui makes this sushi-like stuff out of Spam, sticky rice, and seaweed. I LOVE it, and I hate Spam LOL

I have stayed at the Yacht Club and it is much more deluxe.

They are both actually on AAA's list of 4-diamond resorts, along with the GH, BC, and CR. It looks like AKL, WL, and BWI are at 3-diamonds this year.

http://www.ouraaa.com/news/news/diamond/2008_4D_Lodgings.pdf

It seemed to me that the GF spa was very close to the Poly. Maybe even half way? Maybe they feel it can easily service both resorts.

The fitness center is shared by both resorts. And you're right, it's just about half-way.

I think it was the bad impression he was leaving that was the problem.

I've never stayed at Poly, I've wandered through, and eaten there, and like it well enough. But I don't know enough about it to give a report. Why would I think my opinion (spending a few hours there) had any validity against someone's opinion who's spend a week there?

What was wrong with the OP's post? It was rude and not well supported by personal knowledge.

This is the place to voice opinions about all things disney. Everyone has opinions, and even most way-out opinions are still treated with dignity (or simply ignored!). However, when folks get rude, it shows a lack of respect for others, and it's not appropriate.

Funny you should say that -- while at WS last month, DH tried to convince me that we don't have to go to Paris or Japan (two places I'd really like to visit) because the Disney version is much better and I'd be disappointed in the real thing . I think he's just being cheap...

Anaka Kaui makes this sushi-like stuff out of Spam, sticky rice, and seaweed. I LOVE it, and I hate Spam LOL
.

Oh wow..spam musubi is the best! I know it sounds gross, but it's an island staple. Even first time visitors to the islands love it.

I can't believe this thread is still going. I don't think the OP is even following it anymore  .
